Default Moser 9" sway bar mounts (3" exhaust clamp???) and sway bar hitting rearend pumpkin??

I'll be putting a 9" in my car this weekend that I'm buying from a friend. He never ran a sway bar so I need some help. I plan on using my stock 24mm sway bar, but I thought I read something one time about needing different mounts for the axle tubes to attach the swaybar mounts to? Is this right? Can't you use muffler clamps? If so, what? 2.5"? 2.75"? 3"?

Thanks for any help!

*Oh yeah, do I just use 80w90 or 85w90 with GM posi additive? I think it has a Auburn posi in it.

<EDIT> Read my reply down below about the sway bar wanting to hit the lower tq arm mount and the rear of the rearend housing (pumpkin) Any help on fixing this? Can I make spacers to lower the sway bar down more and hopefully away from the problem areas? THANKS!

3" heavy duty muffler clamps work fine, just have to slot the holes on the strap that goes over the rubber bushing - you will see what I mean when you do it..

80/85w90 with Gm additive should be fine.

I used the BMR weld on sway bar brackets, and poly bushings. I had to use an 1/4" aluminum spacer, between the bracket and the bushing, so the sway bar would clear the torque arm brackets welded on the rear.

Cool, thanks! I put the 9" in today and used the 3" muffler clamps, but we couldn't get the sway bar mounted b/c it wanted to hit the rearend pumpkin and the lower torque arm mount that Moser welded onto the housing.... you know, one of those little pipe mounts for the tq arm. If I space the sway bar down some, will that fix it? I don't see any other way.

Thanks!

Mine was close, I just rotated the bottom of the muffler clamps a little towards the rear of the car and it cleared - pretty close to the t/a mount on the bottom but it cleared and it hasnt moved in a year. You may have to make some spacers, depends on the bar and style of clamps. Here is a pic of mine..

That's why I used spacers. Order the BMR bracket, bushing, and end link kit. When you get the bracket, trace the outline of the bracket, and bolt holes on a piece of cardboard. Then get a piece of 1/4" flat aluminum, the same width of the bracket. Cut it to length, mark and drill your sway bar mount holes. You will have to get longer mounting bolts because of the spacer. This will give you plenty of clearance for the torque arm mounts, and rear cover.

I had to notch the bottom bracket support "pipe" to get mine to clear fully.

That's another reason why I used spacers. I ground the same "pipe" for clearance, but wasn't comfortable with the amount I would have had to take off, to give good clearance. I drove it home and made the spacers, and they work great.

The axle tubes on the Moser 9" are 3". If you get the BMR brackets get the ones for 3" tubes. The Strange 12 bolt is like 2-3/4" tubes, I think.

If you get the BMR weld on brackets, turn them over and look at the flat surface where the bolt holes for your sway bar mount are. The flat side is exactly what you want your spacer to look like. Put the spacer between the BMR mount and the sway bar mount, and your good to go.
