Default Who says a big cam cant pass emissions!! (Thanks ARE!!)

Well today I went back in to try and pass emissions after failing the first time

For those who dont know I have an Agostino Racing Engines 360 cubic inch shortblock with 5.3L 2.02/1.57 valved heads, LS6 intake, and XE-R 230/230 112LSA .605 lift cam.

The first attempt at emissions about a month ago resulted in me failing the idle test (Passed the 40kmh test)

I failed HC

Limit: 300
My results 1104!! Almost 4 times the limit.

I needed to lose over 800ppm HC to pass.

I did the following things:

Changed my oil to 5W40 weight Mobil 1 synthetic

Reinstalled my AIR Pump

Added 600ml of gas line antifreeze to the tank and filled up with Sunoco 94

The big difference came when I went to Wade and Barry at ARE to get the tuning adjusted for the test.

They changed idle speed, timing at part throttle and idle and the fan start temps.

The results

40kmh test:
HC PPM Limit: 278
My Result: 93

CO% 2.20
My result: 0.49

NO PPM: 2898
My result: 15

Idle test:
HC PPM Limit: 300
My result: 281
CO% 1.50
My result: .27

Thanks to ARE who let me stop by and get the changes done while they were dynoing another car.

Now I can concentrate on RACING again!!

Awesome Chris! This definately gives a glimmer of hope to some of us running the big cams. That's sweet.

Great news Chris. That makes me less concerned about the emissions tests when I eventually have to take them.

WOW, very impresive! That's the bigest cam I've ever heard of getting through emissions testing!

"idle speed, timing at part throttle and idle and the fan start temps"

I asume they increased the idle to 1000 rpm, advanced the timing, and lowered the fan temps to 170 deg f. Care to add the specific numbers on this?

Chris you are the man I have to take my car in next July for emissions. I have the MMS 229 cam on a 114 and I am worried about passing. With what you have accomplished, I am going to try and take it on now. Do you think I could get it to pass?? Also what is "Added 600ml of gas line antifreeze to the tank"?? The changes that ARE made to the car to get it to pass, are you going to leave the same setting in the computer or change them back to the way you had it??

Thanks and congrats,
Glenn

Thanks guys

Actually I raised the temp before the fans come on.

Timing was changed slightly, idle raised, and the airpump helped as well.

Gas line antifreeze that contains methonal helps as well. (I wanted to put in a gallon of it but could only buy about 600ml worth)

This tuning change will not affect my WOT 1/4 mile performance at all (besides maybe the fan settings being slightly hotter)

WOT timing is completely unaffected in the range I race.

My car is always between 4500-6600rpms at the drag strip. (Launching at 6500rpms)

I actually like the idle where it is now, very smooth with no shake at all. I could have gone even higher on the idle speed and made even lower HC numbers.

I am going to reset the timing numbers and cooling fans back to what they were though.

As a tip for you guys find out what the maximum allowable idle rpm speed is for your test and go about 50rpm below it (In case IAC causes your idle to jump a little)

Thanks,

Chris

Chris:

Did you add or subtract timing? I thought removing timing helps pass one of the 3 tests, but I may have it backwards?

Iknow that finally getting that sticker is a load off your mind. Relax now and go racing!

Less timing reduces NOx emissions. But big cams usually work better with more idle timing, so this one you would probably want to put back after the test.

Sorry about that

I subtracted timing

Cheers,
Chris

Great to hear you passed Chris, but you do live in Canada and their emission laws almost have to be more lenient than ours

Actually Toronto laws are fairly strigent with the roller test both idle and 40kmh.

However all you need to do is find out the max idle rpm allowed and the max values for each category: HC, CO% and NO ppm.

Then you can judge your cam size appropiately.

I also have Mac headers with dual 3 inch carsound cats. I know of guys that have used stock manifolds with two extra cats installed (for a total of 4) and have passed.

Cheers,
Chris

Doesn't having a 360ci engine make it easier to pass with that cam versus a 346ci?

The difference is very very slight.

On a side note about emmissions testing, we have very strict emmissions limits on cars here in Portland, OR. Some cars that have mechanical FI cant pass in tip-top shape. OBD-2 cars dont have to go on the dyno however... they just plug in a scanner and test for errors. If you dont have errors, you pass.
Now, I wouldnt LS1-Edit the car, erase all the codes, adn then go in there with a really lumpy cam, no cats, and exhaust that burns the eyes and expect them to not look under the car, but with cats and a high idle, LS1-Edit makes passing an LS1 car trivial in this town.
Folks should find out what other areas are moving to the computer-scanning for OBD-2 and newer cars.

Im very happy we have absolutely no e-check in Columbus Ohio because I would never pass.If they change the laws I will have to find a friendly operator to corrupt(c-note)
