Default Legal Cams in California

Are there any? I need to stay smog legal as I drive the car. I would like to put on headers and a cam. What are my options with the cam.

Legal in Cali = Stock!

I heard you can't even pass the visual test if you have long tubes! You guys have it rough over there.

Most anything with a 114 LSA will pass smog, and a lot of 112 LSA cams will pass smog with decent tuning. I passed smog with the GM hot cam... but i have no chance in hell of passing with my current ASA hot cam... but im not too worried about it.

I have the thunder racing 220/220 114 cam. I did alot of research on what cams would pass in CA. This was the best cam I found that will pass for sure. Any more aggressive and you are taking chances. With a 112 LSA it will be very hard to ignore the lope of the cam. As far as longtubes in CA just find a shop that has no clue about camaros. The last time I took a vehicale for a smog in the valley the guy never even looked under the car. If you do a cam and longtubes make sure you get tuned as the cats will be alot farther back on the longtubes and will take longer to start working properly.
quote:

I'm going to run a Comp 216/220, but more importantly a 114 so it will be stealthy, harder to "hear" vs a 112.

Anytime you move the cats, you'll fail the visual in California.

On a M6 you will hear a difference. It is not extreme but it is there. In a A4 I am not sure as you may have to bump the idle up. You should make an additional 30 horse with the cam. I have not dynoed my car yet, but I plan on it soon. I am going to dyno it before and after I put in my headers. But at the track I went from a 108 mph trap to 111.8. As far as the Mac Headers no they are not legal. Any repositioning of the stock cats is not legal. The way I look at it is I have 4.5 years before I need to smog my car anyway. If I cant find a shop to pass the visual I will just put on my manifolds for a week. But if you do headers make sure you run cats. I have been pulled over and checked before by CHP. All they are looking for is if there are cats or not. In other words go with the LT's and carsound cats with the 220/220 114 cam. On stock heads most guys are putting around 380 at the wheels. IMHO that HP level is well worth two days of sweet under the car as a worst case senario.

I keep my car registered in LV. It is cheaper than Calif.
Also, my last Smog Test consisted of the "Computer" OBDII test. They just plugged in under the dash and read the computer. Never looked under the hood. Cool indeed!
If I went with a cam; I would do the Comp 212/218 or the 216/220 on 114LSA. Both should pass easy if you still have to do a "sniffer test".

I've heard that any cam up to 224/224 is fairly easy to pass. Bigger than that and you need a good tune, a really high idle, and a few other tricks to pass the idle test.

RTCamaroSS - I'm amazed you passed with a hot cam. Do you know how close you were to failing, or did you bribe the smog guy?

I dont remember the name of the shop. Go check out some local shops in your area. Watch the tech inspect a few cars. Half the time they are to lazy to look under the car. That was how I found the shop I used.

thanks bro, ill have to check out some shops in fresno and go from there. im not worried about the sniffer, im limiting myself to a modest sized cam on a 114 LSA so i think that wont be a prob with tuning. but i AM worried about visual inspection with my LTs and cutout (BTW do they generally look under the car in the area where my cutout is?), so thats why i asked. thanks again.

I passed with the TR-224 cam with FLP High Flow Cats/Long Tubes

---Minimal ls1 edit tuning (and i mean minimal)
---Idle was 850 in Drive/950 park neutral
---Even had fans turning on earlier with a 160 thermostat! (not good)
---Did not even have the EGR hook up working!!!
(LS-6 Intake Manifold)

Get the car very warm and smog her. Some people over worry a little too much about this. As long as you can find a "friendly" place to go to, every california ls1 owner should be cammmin there car

New smog laws go into effect this summer, FYI. All of the shops will now test on a dyno under load...apparently the limits are harder now too, but I don't know for sure. Anyone with some more info? I saw something about this on cafords.com
