HPTuners set the main spark table enable to 0.0
Ever since I programmed my '04 A4 C5 I've had a surging idle both in and out of gear. I tried all kinds of things and nothing worked. I couldn't tell you how many times I did the idle relearn. Anyway, I finally noticed that the stock program had the "Main Spark Table Selects" at TPS 1.2 and Speed 256. All of my modified programs had the Speed set at 0.0 and NO I did not do that myself. How can I be sure of that other than I KNOW that I didn't mess with this? Because after noticing this I set it back to 256 and saved the program. Guess what? It saved as 0.0 again. I tried this once more to confirm. Then I tried it at 254 and it saved it properly.
So, problem solved. This one was kinda screwy.
BTW, the effect this had was a MUCH higher timing advance (28-30 degrees) than what would be normal for idleing (18 degrees.)
Just a heads up for you HPTuners owners, especially you '04 C5 folks. If your idle surges, check this parameter.

I just verified this and you are correct.
The issue will only occur if you click the save changes button on the spark advance tab with a value of 256 or greater. It seems only C5's have values like these. I found no f-body PCM's with these values.
This will be corrected in version 1.5.
Thanks!

Stephen, the problem has been fixed.
If you or anybody else is in need of this fix, please e-mail me directly with your full name and customer ID #. I will be able to put new software for you to download via our customer login page.
1.5 is schedualed for release this month which will contain this fix.
Thanks!

Changing to 0.0 would make you run off the main
timing table even at stopped idle and that might be
jumpier than you want, the enable makes you use
the Base Spark, Drive or Park tables which on my
car are a bit lower than High Octane Main (stock
vs stock, 4 degrees less idle advance than open
throttle for same RPM & CylAir).

Cool, glad I could help.
Yeah, the car definitely didn't like the higher timing advance the main table gave it at idle. Sure had me stumped for awhile.

Hmm, my %tps is at 1.2 and my speed is at 4.0. I have some cold idle surge after I put my converter in. I raised the idle about 150 rpms and it still has a problem just not as bad. Should I change my speed setting in the main spark table? If yes, than what should I change it to?

Likely want to play with the lower 2-3 columns of the
VE table, generally reducing this a bit helps the idle
stability (the SD tune matters more at idle). There are
also come other fuel tables that index from ECT that
seem to not "get as much press" but might be a way
to get the temperature-specific habdle on it. But minor
leanage of the VE table took care of the little bit of
cold surge I had from my converter. I believe I went
x0.85 on the 400RPM, x0.9 on the 800 and x0.95 on
the 1200RPM columns.
