Anyone got (10-12 pt) and front bars that don't go thru the dash
I am thinking of running front bars for the 10 pt just in front of the front dash assembly... I know it will make it tight, but I would also convert the sides to swingouts if they legal for mid 9's... Anyone? I have an AutoX buddy who has bars like this and I am able to get in and out...
Doing the front bars this way will cost me $700 to finish out the cage and I'd have it done in a weekend.

Local guy around here used an 10pt cage from alston in his 95 Z, his front bars curved around the dash. He was also having swingouts put into it. Was shooting for mid to low 9's, maybe break into high 8's. It was setup very nicely and was quite easy to get in and out of still.

The NHRA inspector just left my shop. The new rules are out and running the windsheild bars in front of the dash isnt going to get you a sticker. They need to hit the floor as far as possible forward to protect your feet. There isnt anyway to get the bars that far forward with the dash in the car so go behind the dash.

Mike Ruth from www.alstonracing.com did my 6 pt rollbar and he said that running the bars in front of the dash will pass NHRA tech since the bars are for protecting the head. I just called him to discuss this again and he's pretty adamant that I can get a sticker but maybe your tech guys are more strict down there.

2 questions PSJ. Why is it cheaper to go in front of the dash. There isnt anymore work if you remove the dash for the fabricator.
Second how the hell will you ever get the dash out later???? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />
Also all NHRA inspectors go by SFI specs. I build cars by these specs. All the inspections should be the same. All I'm saying is the new specs are out and alot of cages are going to be changed. I have one here now that needs $2500.00 of bars removed and replaced and the car had a sticker on it.

Re: Anyone got (10-12 pt) and front bars that don't go thru the dash
The points by your feet should be much closer to the firewall and you only need a bar going across where the roofline meets the windshield to run 9.00. That example looks a little hokey. Maybe they had to add that bar across the dash to go under 9.00? I for one don't plan on going any faster than that. I'll post my pics next week when it's finished.

PSJ, don't start skimping now. You need a safe cage in your car and its your safety. Also the rigity is much better overall if you run the side bars all the way forward. Its not worth chancing.

The car in question in the pictures, I know the car and yes that is real. The tach is not zip tied. I can't remember what its hanging there with, also I can't remember if thats where its going or not. I do know the car will have Twin Hairdried Buick 231. The cage myself I don't think looks all that great but its all a matter of personal taste I guess. But i would much rather have the bars go though the dash and weld to the floor down by my feet.

Re: Anyone got (10-12 pt) and front bars that don't go thru the dash
Go through the dash. It really is not that much of a hassle to cut the holes and fit it correctly and then it look alot nicer. The sfi rules as brian has stated are now stricter and going to tighten up even more I feel. I had my first one through the dash and then this one as well. With the current one I took the bars into the engine bay as well as I personally wanted as much stregth as possible. Its like buying a helmet though you can get the one that is gonna protect your mellon or the one that will pass tech hopefully.
If it were me I would spend the time and yank the dash out and have it done right.

YO RUBBERNECK! Talk to Mikey Kleman, he has a 10 point in his T/A and had the bars run through the dash and the bars followed the contour of the A-pillar. It required removing the dash but it was a clean install. You also have to have a bar run along the firewall which will help prevent the engine from coming through the firewall and landing in your lap in the event of a wreck.
