I was reading this instructions - is this a necessary step or is there another way to accomplish the goal?
yep, its probably the worst part of the install. i took about an inch off of my tsp lid, and cut a fernco bellows to fit just right.

I wouldn't say thats the worst part, the worst is trying to get the ring over the TB, I had to file down the lip of the TB, and it wouldn't go on with it on the car, so I took it off and then hammered it on :)
I hear that some go on easier than others though

hrmm...that kinda sucks. Is there a comparable kit that doesn't require the lid to be cut? I think my clear MTI lid would shatter if I started horsin' around with it.

you just have to be careful when you cut it. i used a dremel tool and it worked out great, it made a nice clean cut.

I didn't cut anything.I have a SLP smooth bellows that I had to cut for my 80mmBBK ,I lubed the ring a little and it pushed in with no problem and my trimmed down bellows seems to be the right size.I have a SLP lid.My micro switch is giving me the problem here but I'm just gonna copy the design of the jimmy jam bracket. My problem is solved.Wish you luck with yours

lubed my up and it slid right into my 80mm BBK with no problem.Did you install it dry?I just put a little wd40 on my finger and spread it over the rubber seal and it slipped right in.I did try the hammer at first then stopped and calmed down a little, I was like a kid on x-mas
