Slower with 4.10's on highway rolls?
I am running a cammed ,bolt on car. I use to love doing roll racing on the highway 20 to 50 mph kicks. My car pulled great on the highway. Now with the 4.10's from the same type of kick ,I am barely getting by cars with less mods than me. I am running 5-6mph faster than these guys in the 1/4 but yet on the highway kicks I am absolutely blowing ***** and only pulling maybe 1-2 cars max. I am probably going to go back to my 3.42's, I just noticed that my car is slower like this and my friends 2001 ws6 was slower on the highway as well with 4.10's. Just would like some thoughts.

If your running 5-6 mph faster your faster on the hwy. It's all in the shifting. Your pulling harder everywhere with the 4.10's. You just need to not fall back on shifts.

Sorry that I do not know anything about highway racing.
At the track now that is a different ball game.
5-6mph faster than the other guys in the 1/4 is a pretty sweet deal. 4.10's at the track rock!

Re: Slower with 4.10's on highway rolls?
I know what you mean. I run a 4.30 gear, with heads and cam, and I can barely outrun a stock Z on a highway run. But at the track, I have a 2 second advantage. I say it's due to having to shift so many times during the run. Try starting a highway run in a higher gear than normal. I typically start from a 70 roll in 4th gear. I can pull away with no problem then, but from a stop, the steep gears will kill you on the street.

I shift pretty good(thanks for the comment Brian ) so I dont think its that. I anhilate these cars from a stop but a damn roll I just have no pulling power like I do from a stop. I use to be fast from a roll.

Re: Slower with 4.10's on highway rolls?
I had the same problem.
It is NOT true that just because your MPH is a little higher in the 1/4 mile, you will be faster from a roll, especially if the sole reason for the increase in MPH is a change in rear gear ratio. Before you dismiss this claim, let me explain (I researched this). With 4.10s, your going to get the jump off the line faster, and get going quicker, but this also means that you get to 4th gear quicker! As long as you finish the 1/4 mile before you switch to fifth gear, then all else being equal, your ET should be a little lower, and your MPH should be a little higher if all you did was change from 3.42s to 4.10s.
However, in a highway race from say 55-135mph, then all else being equal, you will probably LOSE to someone with the SAME horsepower who has 3.42s. The reason is that as a car bangs through the gears, it accelerates slower, and slower. In addition, with 4.10s you will switch to 5th gear at 114MPH, wheras the other 3.42 car won't have to switch to 5th until 137MPH (this is assuming that you both have the stock tire size, and you both shift at 6200RPM). Once you hit 5th gear, the other guy will still be in 4th for another 23MPH, and he will overtake and pass you, unless you have FAR more horsepower than the other guy. Its just the mechanics of transmission vs rear gear ratio.
The solution of course is to add more horespower, which is what I did. That way you can keep your nasty rear-gear ratio, and still pull way ahead of people from a dead stop, AND from a roll, even in 5th gear if you have too.
I hope that helps.
