Was looking into getting some ET Streets for the track, but was wondering how much can the stock tranny with a converter take? If I dead hook, will the tranny break?

Eventually it will with repeated abuse.

It seems to vary a lot...some break right away, some dont. It just depens how you treat it (temps, fluid level, etc).

About the only thing you can do is get a deep pan, tranny cooler, keep the fluid changed regularly, and knock on wood...

some day it will. how many miles you got on the car already? I am still running my stock trans. It has never been into for any reason, yet. Lots of track passes with a 4000+ stall.

my first worry wouldnt be the trans...a dead hook is hurting the rear. i blew my rear with a vig3200 and nittos

I blew my stock 10 bolt with PT4400 and ET Streets. The tranny went about a month latter. Get a deep pan and a cooler. Even after my tranny went out, the fluid was bright red with no burn smell. Tranny was never over 190 degrees. I think the 10 bolt hurt the tranny when it went. I did pull the front tires a week before the tranny went out. That was at ~3,700 race weight.

i am running 68000 miles on et streets and stock trans w/ shift kit never had any probelms except rear end is going out.

May be a few too many zeros there or either a few sets of tires at that many miles.

watch the trans temps man. thats the real killer. hard to cool that bugger off once its up in the 220+ zone (very bad) hope you have a line lock too

Due to my altitude (I live in Utah) I am actually only putting around 300 to the wheels. I used to be worried about the rear end, but there is a turbo LS1 here putting 830 (sae corrected) to the wheels and running a 10.5 @ 139 with 1.8 60s with a manual on the stock rear with et streets. I figure if he can live so can I, especially if I have to do boltons and cam to equal stock sea level power.

But thats when my thoughts turned toward my next weakest link (I think the tranny would be? tell me if its not) and wondered how the 4l60e can hold up, I have heard it is not that strong.

My friend might also run these tires, and would be spraying at least a 100 shot on top of a few more mods then I, so he is probably putting around 400 to the wheels. If my tranny will hold up, how will his?

More than likely with ET Streets the rear end will go first. Put a 12 bolt in it then the tranny will go out soon enough. Just put a TH-400 in it, don't mess with rebuilding the 4L60E and you'll be good to go.

You're more likely to break the rear on drag radials than you are ET Streets. A linelock will help keep tranny temps down during your burnout. But like already stated the rear will most likely go before your tranny.

23000 on my stock tranny. w/over 200 passes with >1.65 60ft's. I just changed it out with a Speed Inc. trans.. It was slipping just a hair. (No probs with my rearend.)

First thing you do...get a trans cooler.

Why would you say that? ET Streets would be worse on the rear.

You are more likely to wheel hop with radials. Wheel hop will destroy a rear end much faster than a dead hook ever will.

ETs will be easier on the rear end than drag radials because of the wrinkle of the side wall takes a lot of the shock away. Loading up the car with the foot brake rather than flashing your converter will also take some shock away. If you spray and race a lot you will eventually change your rear end and tranny. 12 bolt and turbo 350, 400 is too heavy. You are most likely to toast your rear end wheel hopping on drag radials than hooking with ets.

Well he was talking about dead hooking. So ET streets will hook better than DR's.

Hopping with any tire is murder.
