Anyone else here buy a truck and trailer before their race vehicle? Okay, so I'm a little backwards and bought the cart before the horse. :)

The truck is a 2004.5 Ram, Cummins 600 diesel. I've had it almost three months now. I just picked up the 18' steel deck car hauler yesterday. I went with a more fancy looking one since this will be the last open car hauler I purchase so it will have to last a while. I'd like an enclosed hauler, but I couldn't store it at my house.

I'll be using this setup for the first time to haul the '69 to Atlanta for the Year One Commerce Challenge event, where it will be it's official debut. Can't wait!

shopping for an LS1 drag car next....

Wow, that is a nice setup! I'd like to pickup a pickup and trailer a few years down the road to tow. I have a couple questions tho:

- What's a ballpark figure for the cost of an open air trailer similar to that?
- How much does it weigh?
- And I've always wondered, how the heck do you get a car that broke back on the trailer???

:)

we just bought a 26' enclosed. we did the open trailor deal for some time and it just was so annoying. but then again it took me a bit to save up for one, but wow am i glad i got one. we have a 2003 duramax 2500HD to pull it. i gots to get some pics for it. trailor is sitting at FMS right now lol. also it is a pain to store it (pay for storage) but when you hit that winch to pull the car up on the trailor, oh yea. it was worth it!

tony, i think you got some overkill with your rig for that setup. but nothing beats tq to pull that sucker at fast highway speeds, esp if you want ot get home.

we should be hitting up atlanta so it would be cool if we could park by each other and share a few brews!

to answer the questions, yea if it breaks, you better find some buddies! that is where a winch really is nice or required. esp a remote controled one. an open trailor like that one can weigh from 1500-1800 lbs. an enclosed totally depends on what is inside it (cabnets, fridge for the beer, tools, etc. but our 26' weighs only 3800 lbs empty. it is an empty box. you can have car trailors that weigh 4500 lbs the same size. costs - well like a lot of things, it depends on what you want to spend and how much truck you have to pull it. 1500 bucks - 10K - unlimited

Tony, PM me some sponsorship info. I'm a salesman up here in Milwaukee at a chevy store and would love to hook some LS1tech members up if they were looking for some new haulers and willing to travel a bit. Could even pick up at airport that's right down the road :)

PS- also have a Ford store that's part of the 3 store chain (Chevy, Chrysler/Jeep, and Ford)

Trailer prices vary. You can get their basic 18' (2' dovetail) steel deck open hauler for $1895 plus ttl. The rock guard up front was a $250 option. I went with their more deluxe trailer though, it just looks more fancy with its walkaround polished diamond plate step and recessed tow hooks. It was $2250 plus the rock guard. After taxes, $2750 out the door.

I ordered a Superwinch (2300 lb pulling rated) today to bolt to the front of the trailer deck. I also ordered the optional trailer wiring harness kit which is pretty cool. Comes with 19' of heavy gauge wiring and a quick disconnect that you pre-wire onto your truck with the quick disconnect mounted to the underside of the rear bumper. If your car is broken, you just plug it in and pull the sucker up onto the trailer. Total price on the winch/harness was around $300. If you don't have a winch, it takes about 3 normal sized guys to push a car up onto the trailer easily.

Tony that rock guard was a good idea with the dually. I have a hyd. tilt open trailer (no ramps) and was thinking of fabbing it up for mine. The thing I hate about my open trailer is when you run through rain the car gets nasty as hell.
I really want an enclosed trailer though. Gold Rush builds some very nice aluminum enclosed trailers but they are real pricey. They run about a $1000 a foot but are very light and they hold their value well.

Have no place to put anything so I had to go small and light. Trailer only weighs 1300lbs has 4 wheel brakes and a 4' dovetail with 6' ramps and the car goes right on without even jacking up the tongue. Plus the fenders come off in 20 seconds but C5 and F-body doors clear with them on. Nice trailer..

Been towing with an '03 Durango with factory tow package and 3.90 axles and so far so good. Little more light duty then I'd like but it fits in the garage, gets 11mpg towing (17 not towing) and handles fine - the trailer has great brakes and that really helps. For occasional use it works out well, I have put 30K on the truck in less then a year, 15K towing, and it isnt falling apart yet :D

After having 2 street/strips cars (neither with overdrive) I finally got a pick-up this April, an '04 GMC Sierra 1500 ext cab 5.3L 3.73 geared. Bought an open trailer from a bud (GeorgeC) and the Nova has now been towed to the track once after years of driving and swapping tires. I'm getting some experience for my tow to Atlanta next month for the et finals. And to think I drove the Nova there in 2001 (6-1/2 hours each way, about 400 miles and 3500 rpm's) :eek2: I'll have pictures soon on the complete set-up, meanwhile, here's a link to the truck pics: http://community.webshots.com/album/142012841GVSTCJ

I tow with a 03 2500HD 4x4 crewcab Dmax/Ally.Trailer is a 2004 44 ft Eagle tri axle gooseneck.I weigh 16,500 empty with the truck and trailer combined.I can put two cars in it and run 70 mph and get 11 mpg doing it.The 44 foot goose tows WAY better than my old 28 foot tag.The only negative I see is it takes a lot of space to turn around and filling the truck up with the trailer attached limits you to truck stops only.I'm 60 ft long overall with the truck & trailer.I know why people put auxiliary tanks in the beds of their trucks now.

towing safely has virtually nothing to do with cubes, horsepower, and tq really. it is the suspension mostly and brakes. you will experience the death wobble/ trailor sway. :bang:

Thanks for the compliments Guys !

As for selling them, I do not believe there would be many people willing to dish out that kind of money to make it worthwhile for me. I have more $ in materials than most half-decent trailers cost complete.....But it does have a winch, batt, etc. I think I went overboard, but it really works well for what I use it for. I have approx 2500mi on it this year with my car on it, and no problems so far. Even had an Impala SS on it for a trip. I made long ramps ~75in that slide out the back on nylon, that helps for my low car loading. It is pretty quick and easy. No tilt, but it does rock with the weight when I drive the car on. Removeable fenders for opening door on trailer (again my car sits pretty low).

I plan to be at Cedar falls, IA. this sat, and Tri-state on Sun. Be sure to say hello if anybody is there.

Quick question for you guys with low boy open trailers. Is their enough room for you to open the door and get out over a door bar. I went and looked at a couple tonight and my doors will deffinatly hit the fenders and I'm not sure if there's enough room to get out over a ddor bar. I'm not sure on the width but it was the widest open one they had, maybe 8-8.5' (just a guess).

I can. :drive: I do not have a door bar, but my car door can open completely. I made removeable fenders just for that purpose. I figured once on the trailer, I did not want to "Dukes of Hazzard" it all the time. If I winched it up, I would have no way of closing the window if I needed to steer at all pulling it up. 102" overall is the legal widest I believe, maybe different in some states. I am 81" for platform. I designed it with just enough room to get the door open with fender(s) off. I looked for the shortest tire with the load rating I needed, and made the trailer as low as I could. My car sits pretty low, especially with the y-pipe.

I would look for something you can get the doors open on. Much nicer. :)

Different trailers have different fender heights. Measure the bottom of your door to the ground and then take your tape measure with you when you go trailer shopping. Just measure from the deck to the top of the fender on the trailer and compare it with your door height.

Removable fenders are usually an option for most trailers, if you custom order it.

GM Muscle
09-25-2004, 09:19 PM
That's a great idea, I never even thought of making a removable fender. I found a slightly used trailer that I like so I would have to rig up the fender myself. I'm not sure of the deck hieght but it's about the lowest open car trailer I have ever seen, which is the main reason that I like it. With the skinnies on the car my front airdam is about 2-3" off the ground.

Thunder's trailer is awesome. How many cars can you put in there?

Thanks John. We can put 2 cars in it. Then pull them out at the track, kick on the A/Cs, and party down. :D

Geez, do you need a CDL to legally drive that thing? :jest:

Probably so. I weighted it on the Cat Scales on the way back from the Spring Break Shootout. Truck, trailer, 2 cars, 4 people, and all of the other crap that goes along with that came in at a little over 31,000 lbs. :eek2:

If and when I ever get pulled over I'm just going to play very stupid.

Thanks, and I will always race my Chevy's but for now I'll keep towing with my Ford. I've driven and towed with them all and I love my 6.0 Powerstroke the best. Well that is until '07 when Ford comes out with the 6.6 Twin Turbo. :)

No I don't do a lot of plowing down here. With 31K I can set my cruise on 75-78 mph and get about 8.5-9 mpg. That thing pulls like a mofo. :)

Paul, if you ever think the DOT will give you a problem just make sure that the trailer is registered under somebodys personal name and then put "not for hire" somewhere on the sides & back to declare it for personal/pleasure use. I know several guys that do this to avoid having to get a CDL and other DOT issues. It's basicly the same reason that all these 85 year olds can drive around in there huge motorhomes without any special license. :)

well I think I win for the sexyest truck! Cadillac Escalade EXT, 22" b/c of towing no 24" and 3 tvs, nav, speakers you name it I got it! The only thing it doesn't have is good gas mileage. Looking for a 28' inclosed trailer in white but will take 3 months to build custom so will buy in December after taxes. :chug:

Shoulda got a ford f350... I used to work at a dodge dealer. Soon as the 100k warranty was up on the cummins, they were in for work. Like they have a button they push when they hit 100k and everything breaks. Dad had a ram diesal. traded it for the F350. And the F350 puts the poor dodge to shame. Cant comment on the duramax. Just that it was too exepensive at almost 40k picked up a used f350 for 22 with 20k miles on it :D

wow, you guys make us look bad. Our tow vehicle is a 95 Chvey Pickup with over 150k miles and the trailer is a used trailer we picked up from Tony a while back for under $1k. We recently got new wheels and tires for it and replaced the floor boards too since one fianlly broke when my step-dad was loading up his nice 80's Malibu. :thumbsdow

Nothing wrong with that set-up....that's the "grassroots" racer set-up. I grew up around that kind of set-up in the late seventies/early eighties when my father bracket raced at a couple of tracks around Indiana & Kentucky. All his buddies had similar towing/hauling stuff too. When that's all you can afford, then that's all you can go with....

But I Added tv's,Navagation,PS2,DVD,5.1Digital suround sound,ect....

And a new motor in the planing stages! :smokin2:

About it's towing ability works fine I towed my camaro on this 20"aluminum trailer! It was easy. I even tryed flooring it truck hauled ass! The only thing I would change is some bigger brakes, those big wheels don't help!
