Manual Transmission - Shortening a B&M Ripper

I have a quick question for anyone out there in the know:

Those of you that had a B&M Ripper shortened, the shaft obviously needs to be turned down before you can rethread it. This would have to be done in a lathe. My question is does that straight part of the shaft simply unscrew from the rest of the shifter handle? How is it in there...B&M obviously had to have machined this piece somehow on a lathe, and I was just wondering how it all went together (and so did the machine shop I took it to for that matter).

Well, either someone knows and is holding out, or no one does, but either way, for your edification, the stick is indeed one solid piece. The straight part does not come off from the rest of the shaft, so the machine shop had to turn it down "the hard way" (his words, not mine). Whatever he did, he got it done, and I'm so very glad he did. I was getting tired of using my old factory Hurst shifter while I was waiting to get that one cut...HUGE difference in shifting quality.
