Default How can I find out what posi unit my stock rear end has?

I have a 2000 Camaro SS. It was originally a 6 speed car, so it came with a 3.42. Just wanted to know what kind of posi/limited slip unit I had. Thanks.

I believe you have the zexel torsen unit. I uses gears instead of the older style that use clutch discs.

Both wheels in the air, trans in neutral, the OEM Torsen
will counter-rotate if you turn one wheel (same as an
open diff) while a clutch-type unit (assuming the clutches
aren't completely shot) will have both wheels turning
together.

That's the easiest way I know.

The rear end isnt in the car anymore, but I spun one axle while it was on the ground and both axles spun the same direction. So if its the clutch type, whats its name/brand?

I think that only the 98's came with the posi. 99-02 came with the torsen, but the posi was a special order option from SLP. I believe it's Auburn that makes them.

Well I dont really know what to think...if I spin my rear and both of them turn in the same direction, its an Auburn, but the rear came out of my 2000 SS and only 98's came with Auburns. Im so lost, is there any other way to find out what I have?

You could pull the cover and inspect it, vs the pics on
manufacturer's web site. Might find a number on the
carrier. Zexel has a bunch of helical gears in it. You
might have received the "special order" rear end as
SLP had a lot of leeway in what they put onto non-
pre-ordered vehicles.

If you have the original paper work that came with the car, you may be able to find out from there. It sounds to me like you have the Auburn Posi.

I have a 1998 with the Auburn Posi. Weak as ****. Drag radials and stock power = new spider gears, but I hear Auburns are unserviceable, so... you're screwed? I dunno, but I hate my 10 bolt.

What type limited slip does the '99 Trans Am LS1 have? Is it the Zexel? What weight rearend grease would you recommend running in this? I am having the pinion bearings replaced and contemplating synthetic grease. Also, do you have to put in a bottle of limited slip additive????

Thanks,

You should confirm what kind you have as lube needs
differ. Presuming you have the later stock Zexel...

Don't believe you need any additive in a Torsen. I've
read that using heavier weight gear oil (not grease)
will increase the torque biasing limit on the stock unit
which is a good thing. I went thicker but didn't notice
much out of it. Word to the wise, change the rear oil
often, it's recommended at like 10K intervals but it
seems not to have been part of my regular dealership
maintenance, gear-to-case Torsen bind process seems
to make shavings as a regular way of business. I think
this is only when you actually get into wheel slip under
power (but who would do a thing like that?). Anyway,
it wants changing more often than it usually gets.

The Camaro SS from 99+ should come with Torsen diff from factory. However, there's an option from SLP to upgrade to Auburn Pro which costs extra. You may have one of those cars. As far as I understand, if you see spider gears and springs in the POSI, that's auburn. But if you see only a bunch of helical gears, that's Torsen.
