Default 4l80 How strong?????????

My friend that is swapping his camaro doesnt want to use the 6 speed that came with the motor, so i shifted him towards a 4l80 for 800 at the same junk yard. He wants to know how much power a stock 4l80 can handle and wats the weak link in the tranny. thanx

Yes.......same 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears and parts............plus a .74 OD

as long as you are geared properly, and arent shifting into 4th @ WOT with over 600HP, the 4L80 will hold everything you have and then some

I have one being built for my z28 right now. I know they are pretty damn heavy duty unit. With just the transgo shiftkit it is rated at 900 hp . Atleast thats what they claim. Ill let ya know

Im tired of dealing with the 4l60`s

4L80 is a great tranny, and very strong even stock. If you put $1000 in parts into a 4L80 tranny, it will handle damn near as much power as you want to throw at it. It is very heavy though and robs rwhp compared to a 4L60.

Hi guys.
I did a 4L80e conversion into my Holden Monaro (GTO Pontiac)

I have 575rwhp through it. The trans is a stock unit. It has done 4000miles and 8 drag passes with no grief at all. I am currently putting a stroker crank in to the ls1, So while the motor is out I am putting a shift kit and clutch pack in the trans to to be safe.

I can tell you it was the best move i have made....after 3 4l60's, breakinf input shafts etc....Enen got the standard computer to control it. Dtiving the car you wouldnt know I changed it.

PM me if you need more details!

Rob

Hey Rob, I'd recommend adding a vacuum modulator to your ( transgo-2 ) shift kit update, you'll be stoked at the shift response of the transmission and the pressure rise / reaction @ WOT.........Also it will protect you from run-away extreme high pressure = case and hard part breakage! Have fun, more later, Matt

I hear you can shift the gears manually. Does this work like a Th400 or a different way?

Trans go makes a "stage 3" shift kit that makes the 4L80 full manual. I have one of these sitting in my garage that im going to be putting in over the winter. Im on my 5th 4L60E rebuild.
