I phoned them up today and the manager said that he thinks there going to change my pistons, and that the shop forman will contact me , my question is if a cylinder is overbored as per gm specs and you replace the piston with one the same size will you not have the same problem, or do they have pistons a couple of thousands oversize, has nobody out there heard or have anything done to there engines????

I just had my pistons replaced . They told me it's a new design and they have to put the largest piston in #1 and the Smallest in #8 so they are aware of the problem. Since then I have not had any ticking noise with my motor. GM called me Monday night at work and asked if everything was OK so far and they extended my Warranty on the Motor only 5 years and 60K miles.

When do you hear the piston slap? Idle, cruising, WOT? I have never heard it before.

Mine starts ticking at idle then gets worse after a couple of minutes and under load it's at its worst.I/ve been at car shows and when leaving after a couple of hours stopped it starts banging away very embarasing, Terry when they changed your pistons did they give you any specs on the sizes?

I ended up with a new block due to piston slap. After they tore the motor down, they determined it would be better to replace the block than to just put new pistons in.

No they didn't give me the specs on the sizes. Mine only ticked between 100 and 180 deg after that no ticking. But now since the piston replacement not at all. I guess if it's bad it may due damage to the sleeves of the engine requiring a block replacement, which would be cheaper then a re sleeve.

The engine is all apart, the dealer called me in because Iasked to see the engine and bore specs, and when I went in they had no mic's for measuring the bore or dia of piston, I went and got mine and checked the bores and GM's spes is 3.897 to 3.898 and every cylinder checked were at 3.899 all 1 thousandth of an inch oversize and the new piston spec with the coated patch is 1 thousandth bigger then stock now there calling GM to see what they want to do with it ?????

They ordered new pistons and had a m/c shop mic them .There was only one that would fit the specs for the 3.899 bore, so they had ordered another set and are hoping they can get 3 more pistons at 3.898", other wise there over gm's spec of .0011" tolerance.

Got the car back today, not a noise in the engine at all, even feels like those graphite coated pistons are freeing up a few more ponies, we'll be able to tell next spring at the track. If anyone out there still think it's normal to have your motor slapping away , you should have seen the wear on my # 1 piston and .004" wear on it,
