Its a multi-stage race from NY to FL during the summer and its just a bunch of high performance cars. It looks really sweet to do. Every stage you earn points depending on your placing there are a lot of ppl too.

The Canon ball run was in the US! It legitimized into the One Lap of America. Some of the stuff from the movie (with Burt Reynolds & Dom DeLuis) actually happened. Brock Yates (from Car and Driver) had a cameo in it too. He was involved in the real Canonball run (which inspired the movie).

Im not too familiar with the different cost to cost racing rallys...however....Gumball 3000 is held every year. The one I seen started in NYC and ended in LA. It's mostly full of European/Italian cars, Occasionally a McLearn F1. It's organised by Maximillion Cooper. He is a british guy that started it out as a race amongst 50 of his friends, and quickly became VERY popular. The next race following Sept 11th....they had 2 or 3 different guys donate their ferrari's to be auctioned off to the higest bidder to aid in the 9/11 victim's family fund. So... Although they do cause a bit of trouble and are usually seen as "rich brats that have no regard for anyone but themselves..." they are actually a pretty good group of guys/girls. (every group has their exceptions of course)

The Canonball run (the way i've understood it) was in retaliation to the Federal Government's mandate of the 55mph speedlimit. During the 70's.

I far as I remember... It was in the 70's, but I don't know if it had any relation to the Government setting the nation-wide speed limit to 55mph.
