Again, another vid from Piedmont Dragway. They have some amazing footage!
Watch the vid ...you will see a STREAM of fire coming from what used to be the snorkel scoop. Again, the guy came out okay...thanks for safety equipment.

Look how bad it made the guy standing next to the car jump. That didnt look like fun. I bet he was spraying like a huge shot and had a leak or backfire.

the only bad thing is nitrous is not flamable. it is combustable under high pressure but not flamable.

No. Nitrous oxide by itself is non-flammable. However, the oxygen present in nitrous oxide causes combustion of fuel to take place more rapidly. Heat + Fuel + Oxygen = BIG FIRE.

That was huge. Glad the guy is okay.

I feel bad for the car now though...

That would slow you down for a day or two from racing. Glad hes ok

Hell yeah you and I both would have jumped

Yea, the site is unusually busy at night with all the big money/big dawg racers checking the sites, stats, race schedule, etc. For an 1/8th mile track it is busy as hell and their site is even busier.

This is no such think as a nitrous fire. Never has been never will be. O2 or oxegen is not flamelbe nore is nitrous. Put them together and they are still not flamible. See you have a fuel (race gas) then you have the air with alowes to to burn. If you add O2 then it cause the fire to burn hotter. If O2 was flameble than we would all be on fire all the time.

This is no such think as a nitrous fire.

Can someone explain chemistry to this moron? While we're at it, can someone give him a spelling check?

1st, a fire or explosion, needs 3 components to occur. As stated in my previous post, guess what they are: HEAT, FUEL (or a fuel source), and OXYGEN . WOW!

2nd, Guess what - the air around us is in fact OXYGEN. Guess what? Nothing will burn without oxygen. Wow, what a discovery!

3rd, Guess what - you can put OUT a fire by suffocating it from...guess again, YES - lack of OXYGEN! WOW!

So, for the analy moronic, I'll state it this way next time - NITROUS EXPLOSION, RESULTING IN THE HEAT, FUEL AND OXYGEN FIRE AND ENHANCED BY MORE OXYGEN CONTAINED WITHIN THE NITROUS.

Okay GOOBER? You are really a goober. I didn't expect any less of a reply from someone with that nickname.

Sorry, that fire is not fed by nitrous. His fuel pump is running like mad. 100PSI of fuel will do that to you. You can see the nitrous spraying out of the car, but the fire is not growing or fueling where the nitrous is. Watch where the fire is actually coming from, it's off the ground.

Now there is no question that a nitrous back fire started it. Usually what happens is the intake pops up and either rips out the injectors (for EFI cars) or rips up the fuel lines. That fire is really being fueled by a pump that is still running, that's why it climbed to the back of the car so fast. High octane race fuel will find it's own oxygen when it gets out.

Yes nitrous burns because it has oxygen. But a little more chemistry would tell you that the molecule is too stable to burn without compression. You have to split it first before you can release the oxygen molecule from it's molecular bond. It's the same argument for using oxygen in water to fuel cars. Figure out how to split the hydrogen off and you'll have oxygen. It's easier to do with nitrogen atoms. You can actually see in the video that the nitrous is fanning the flames on the hood of the car and the fire is actually growing towards the back of the car.

Many of us have talked about this locally here. We were all debating about putting a master electrical kill switch in the car right next to the Halon extinguisher handle.

I agree DERTY, that is why I initially talked about the stream coming out of the hood. I state later that it was a nitrous explosion...I know this, just typed my subject quickly. Again, people taking everything a little too literal. It's also quite obvious the entire car is engulfed in a fuel fire.

Basic Chem. lesson 2: heat can and will break down or decompose a molecule.

So, explain to me again how a nitrous explosion occurs in an intake? ;)

We don't like to talk about nitrous backfires. :nono: Kind of like saying "I haven't had a ticket in a while". :D

All this chemistry talk reminds me of college (chem engg), therefore I'm not commenting. I hated college.
