A4 install with PT4000, problems...
Ok, i swapped in a 4l60e (car was t-56) with a PT4000 converter, and it seems like i'm getting a lot of slip part throttle. I can't tell if it's converter slip or an internal trans problem though. The weird part is when the converter locks up in OD (seems to be the only gear it locks up in, and only above 45 mph), it works perfectly. I can accelerate as hard as it will let me without downshifting and there doesn't seem to be any slip at all. Also when cruising at just about any speed above 10 mph, i can slam it WOT and it immediately takes off like crazy. Doesn't seem to be slipping, and it finds 100mph pretty darn fast.
It only seems to be having a slip problem when i'm not at WOT, and the converter is not locked up.
One thing i noticed, and i don't think this is right, the converter doesn't seem to lock up at all in 1-3 gears. It will only lock above 45 mph in OD. weird? common problem? I'm a dumbass?
Please help out
Eric

You have to understand just what a "stall converter" is. Its designed to let the RPMs run higher for the same amount of speed. It puts you in your powerband sooner, and keeps you there longer, thus making your faster.
In order to do that, the converter is "looser" or is able to slip more. From stock to 4000, it slips MUCH more. The fact that it feels "fine" when locked, tells you the transmission is OK.
Stock PCM programming usually doesn't lock the converter untill around 45 MPH.
I think once you get used to it, you'll really enjoy it.

thats what i thought, just wanted to make sure before i went bashing on the thing. I don't suppose theres anyway to change the program to make the converter lock up sooner is there? say like 30 mph? Seems like that what make stop and go driving a bit easier...

The converter lockup is in the tuning.
I had my part throttle lockup set for 30-35mph. Makes a world of difference in drivability.
BTW.. it's not uncommon to hate a stall when you first put it in
Give it a couple weeks for you to get familar with it and maybe a couple track passes.. then you'll be in love.

couple more things, as to why i think something is wrong...
The big thing is, no matter gear or rpm i am in, i can snap the throttle wide open, and the engine will immediately rev to about 6800 rpm and stay there. Speed will increase, though it doesn't seem to change the rpm. You can hear it shift, but the rpm doesn't seem to come down. Mind the whole time this is happening the car is pulling like a raped ape....
Good bad?

If your fluid level is ok then I would say that your converter is a lot bigger than a 4000. With a 4000 converter and stock gears your RPM should drop to around 5400 on each shift at WOT. 6800 is way too high.
Taking off from a stop how much RPM does it take to get the car moving with the traffic?

it starts rolling at like 1500 rpm, but to keep up with the normal flow of traffic it takes about 3000 rpm.
I drove it again today, and im starting to think that you guys were right, it's not slipping. Looking at it again when i slam the throttle wide open it goes to about 5800, and then climbs to the rev limiter which is set at 6800. I think it's about normal, though i do kinda agree that this thing might be more like a 4500 stall than a 4000 stall. I bought it used, so who knows....
