Claying the car is a HUGE step in paint prep. Here's what to do . Wash the car, get a ziplock bag and put it over your hand and run your fingertips down the hood..on the roof...trunk lid. If the surface is not as smooth as glass, you need to clay.

I say "definitely". You're about to apply heat and high speed polishing orbits to your paint surface. If there are any foreign particles in the paint before you start, you risk dragging that particle all over the surface, causing more scratches and more problems. Take the extra half hour to clay, then wash it again. You will be very pleased with the results.

What kind of polish(es) do you plan to use? Just curious.

How bad are the swirls?

What works for me on minor to moderate swirls is 3M Perfect it III Machine glaze which can be found locally (hopefully). 1st pass with the cutting pad, 2nd pass with the polishing pad.. Stuff works great with the PC. Ive used a NXT topper after thes steps... Awesome looking but NXT is lacking in durability ..

I mainly use Menzerna Intensive polish with the heavier cutting pad, then follow that with Menzerna Final Polish II with the white pad. Then I protect with a layer of Blackfire sealant.

Another combination I've used with good success is Meguiar's ColorX followed by either NXT or a combination of Meguiars #7, followed by Meguiars #26. I feel I get better results with the Menzerna stuff, but there's a lot to be said for using products you can find more readily available.

I've not used the 3M products, but a buddy of mine swears by them, and his cars always look great.
