Thumbs up B&M LS1 Converter (results)

So we headed out to LACR (elevation 2710’), our local race track, after just finishing installing our prototype B&M converter. The specs I gave out previously were incorrect, these are the correct specs: 12” diameter, 2600 stall, 2.0 STR. First impressions were that it was stock. I tested it out at our facility and it spun the tires without stalling up. Not a problem, we are in the testing stages only. After driving it home from work, I noticed during the shifts it would stay at 2000 rpms. Hmm, you can tell it has some stall. My wife took it down the ¼ mile, since she is the test driver. I had planned on video taping her runs, but our video camera’s battery was dead. Her previous best with our ‘stock’ SS (it only has the Hooker LTs & ORY) and 26x10.5x16 ET Streets was: 13.76 @ 101, 2.10. Now with the B&M converter her best was a 13.41 @ 102, 1.91 nothing changed. After this, we decided to go to a lower elevation track for more test runs. We went to California Dragway and opened the cutout. The SS ran a 13.07 @ 104 with a 1.92 60’. You can see the video here: B&M Converter Video On our way home, loaded with our drag racing gear in the SS, I decided to test out the shift extension. From about 65 I floored it and it took off like a rocket, easily reaching 90 in no time. The shift extension was about 4500 rpms. Seems this converter may not exactly be the choice for drag racers, but it may be a good choice for the freeway flyers as it has great pull on the top end.

We are now going to develop a 10”, which I had misunderstood this one was, and we will be experimenting with a 3000-3600 stall variation. Please stay tuned for those results, as I will post the results then as well. Hopefully next time the SS will be Bone Stock again and can give us a better comparison over stock.

2600 stall? Seems like a huge waste of time to me....

We are testing to see what changes can be made affordably, prior to making expensive changes to the converters. We want to build affordable converters for the general public, with some higher priced units for the more hard core enthusiasts. This is just our first step in this project, better results and converters will follow.

Hey John, nice to see you around still. Hmm, might have to look into that.

Good luck in your development. A few thoughts

1) You should not need Et Streets on a car with headers and a small stall. You'd run faster with Nittos at 24lbs.

2) 1.92 60' isn't much better than stock. Maybe not using ET streets would help there too since ET Streets are bigger than stock.

3) 4500 is an extremely high shift extension for a 2600 stall, I'd like to see how you measured it.

4) How about a locked and unlocked dyno (back to back pulls) as part of the testing.

Thanks for your input Ragtop 99, I always value your converter input.

Hmm, good suggestion. The reason for using the ET Streets was because I already have them and currently do not have Nittos or BFGs. If you believe it would benefit the results, I will look into buy a set.

3) 4500 is an extremely high shift extension for a 2600 stall, I'd like to see how you measured it.
I verified it optically. I will hook up my HPTuners to it this weekend, when I test out the 0-60 mph time and G Force at launch, to accurately display the shift extension. Curious, what is the stock shift extension, I didn't have time to check that out. I recall my (loose) Vig3200 had a 5000 shift extension though

4) How about a locked and unlocked dyno (back to back pulls) as part of the testing.
I doubt B&M would reimburse me for it, but I will see if we can also do that, that is a very good suggestion. Thanks!

Are you using stock shift points? stock shift extension is around 3800 rpm. Log the 1-2 upshift. mph & rpm is about all you need to log.

Vig 3200 normally comes in lower than 5000 rpm.

John, I'll see if I can stop by one of these days.

Ragtop 99, I'll log the 1-2 upshift's rpm and mph. And yes, I have the stock shift points.
