Welcome man! You are lucky. When I was 16, I was a fat kid driving a 1986 Mazda 626. That car was bulletproof though, got it high centered off roading and rallying more than a few times and nothing ever broke. Now I won't even dare take my car on a dirt road.

Have fun! Tell a senior that you have a virgin car and ask her to help you break it in. :pimp:
This thread made me think of my first car and the times I had in it. It was an old beater, an '81 Olds Cutlass, but I dropped a Chevy 383 (which cost $1000 more than the car!) and TH350 in it and had a ball.
Don't listen to anyone who calls you spoiled or anything. I tell you what, if my parents had the money and wanted to buy me a new sports car, you better believe I would have taken it. Also, you may get some hypocrites (not on this board, but in person) telling you to drive responsibly and to be careful and all that. I'm telling you to have a blast. You only live once. My high school years hold memories I will cherish for the rest of my life. Some of them included putting that stroker through its paces.
I'll probably catch :devil: for saying that, but oh well.

My dad, I have paid for all of my mods this far.
We got a really good deal on my car, and my choices were a ls1 or a classic car pretty much, and being we have quite a few classics already(71 buick GS 455 Stage 1, 71 Monte carlo, 76 monte carlo, 78 MGB, 2 67 camaros, my sis has a 69 camaro, 65 VW dune buggy) I wanted something new.

Congrats on the Z28. I got my WS6 when I was 17 and drive responsibly. That doesn't mean that I don't have my fun though. Anyways, get used to the power and have fun! Let the mods begin (you have to mod it, it's against the law if you don't).

Nice car for you first one. Funny that the insurance is cheapper then a truck. Ahh my first car was a 85 TA with a 350 dropped in it black with pearl goast flames on it. But I didn't start driveing till I was 18.
hey, i'm 16 too. Right now i'm trying to fully convince my parents on letting my get a super nice WS6 trans am. My parents know I drive my cars hard and they think im gonna go crazy. But once my dad told me that I would need to pay back most of the 16000 that the car is, you can be assured that I will baby that sucker.
Got any advice for trying to get around the "It's low to the ground and it's hard to see over the hood." line my parents always tell me?
Sorry for my tangent I don't want to hijack this thread.

Tell them its stupid too look down at the edge of the hood. Always look ahead. NOT down. everyone should know that. Its like riding a bike. Look where you WANT to be and you will go there not where you think it should be because you will end up in a curb.
By the way...Congrats on the new ride. :burn:

Since the author of this thread replied, I guess it's okay. :)
If they are feeding you that crap, then the problem is not that it's too low or that it's hard to see over the hood, it's that they don't want you to have that car. Figure out the real reason and work on that instead. Just a hunch, but it's probably the fact that it's one hella fast car. No advice on that one since you say they already know how you tear up the tiers.
Buy a 93-97 on your own. Hell, you can get a really nice one for like $5000. Most banks will take a chance on you for that amount. By the time you're 21, you'll have super credit if you paid the loan off well.
That was my problem. When I was 21, I had lived on my own for a couple years and had gone through two cars and a motorcycle, but had never gotten a loan. No credit is as bad as bad credit! So, I got a $5k loan and paid it off in like six months. Still no good. They want to see a long-term payment history.

When I got my first Camaro it was a lot of work. What I found works the best instead of getting a straight up no is get him there "just to look". Then its "lets just test drive". Make sure you let him drive. Done deal after that.

I got my car when i was 17 and i still am 17 but theres one catch. My dad knows i like street racing and racing in general so he restricted my car to 35% throttle...but he takes it off for the track so thats kind of fun. I guess i could say i got a 99 really good sounding V6.

lol, how did he do yours? I was 18, 21 now. When I got my ticket 120+ in a 65, he siliconed a bolt on the side of the throttle body and took a picture incase I messed with it. It was so slow.

11-07-2004, 12:15 AM
Similar to mine but he actually drilled a hole in it and and thredded it. then he painted the screw so he would know if it moved at all since it would crack the paint if i removed it. I get it off though when im 18 if i get no tickets so far so good.

Welcome to the site man. Nice car don't let anyone give you shit about having nice stuff. I have some nice stuff as well but I don't show it off or act like the shit. I mean what are you supposed to say no when your parents offer you a trans am? People in high school are very jealous but what the hell. Just don't let it go to your head and realize that you really are lucky. (I don't show off the beamer, but you damn well better believe I drive that car like it's meant to be driven.)

That's a nice ride you got there!
Don't even want to say what I had as a "vehicle" when I was 16.
As for mods, seat-time, seat-time, seat-time. Then I would suggest intake, exhaust, then some suspension pieces to make your ride track ready. Next maybe a set of track wheels/tires.
Enjoy your car and be careful of the "Mod Addiction"

I was amazed also. But the insurance agent told us that the truck can cause more damage than the Z28 so they were going to charge about $180.00 more every six months for the truck.
It helps big time that he can be insured on the parents insurance plan (we have multiple discounts). Also, since the car is paid for no comp or collision needed, liability only.
Hope that helps explain it :D

Rollin Black, your a pretty cool dad. Im young too and my 1st car was a 99 Z, im also blessed with a dad who loves cars. I got him to buy a 99 Trans Am and he cant wait to put more mods on it. Its awesome to see other father and son car lovers, but most of all its good to see a father who trusts his kid with a 300+hp LS1 car, im sure he will respect his car as much as I have to my car.

I'm bet that was only based on analysis of the stock power level though.
I'd be willing to bet a Z28 at 190mph will best the truck in the damage department.

I'm glad you cleared that up cause i was stripping a gear trying to figure that one out. I'm 22 and my full coverage is 130 a month. which isn't bad but i went from my 88 s10 blazer at 38 a month to 127.87 for my Z28. btw nice car man. you need a lot more experience before you start modding that thing IMO. these ls1s are bad ass stock and if you don't know how to drive it you'll be in the parts section with a totaled car on your hands. i wouldn't get into the motor for a while. maybe just some exhaust and a shifter and some simple shit like that. anyways just be safe and have fun.

good choice for a first car!!! that's awesome your parents got it for you, leaves you more money for mods. I'm 18 and bought my 98 ws6 as a birthday gift for myself (although, i was lucky enough to find a great paying job for my age... unfortunately i had to leave it for college). Good luck with the car and have fun with it, nothing beats the adrenaline rush you get when you race!!
and the insurance thing, it kills me to think how much money i'd have for more mods if my insurance weren't 2,900 for the car for 6 months :ripped:

[QUOTE=comdatworker]heh i found out tonight that even the stupid laws r there for a reason, and u should follow every one of then, becus i didnt, i lost it, i lost my baby, i lost my dreams, i lost everything, the trust and respect of my parents and my life, not really my life, but everything i loved in my life all my plans, dreams of racing besid my dad out on the track, playing around, all the good times, i lost that, u need to obey the laws, and slow down in the rain.
I'm Sorry to hear about your accident and i hope its not totalled. Oviously you couldn't handle the responsibility of a V8. I got my LT1 When i was 16, i was the ONLY kid in my school with a v8, i was big man on campus. I was never involved in a accident that was my fault (my buddy rearended me in his 94 Z) I am now 18 years old and selling my LT1 with plans to get a bike (this spring) and a ls1 in about a year. I am selling my LT1 so i can get a cheaper daily driver so i can save up while i goto college. My LT1 wasn't stock (Longtubes, ORY Pipe, Borla, Intake, Pro 5.0, Centerforce clutch, and a 100 wet shot and a few other goodies). My mom knows i race, i race at the track, race on the street. She knows i have done over 155mph, she knows everything. She trusts me and i trust myself in my car. I know what my car can and can't do and know when its limits have been reached. When i first got my car i was so scared of it because it was my first v8. I have never wrecked a car on my own fault, and consider myself a very decent driver. I still respect my car and know its limits. My mom would watch me race at the track etc. etc. She trusted me, i gave her no reason not too. RWD cars are nothing to mess around with in the rain, i play around in the rain ALOT, but i dont endanger others, for example, i wont do a top speed run with someone with me. I personally believe that since i pay for EVERYTHING for my car (insurance, payments EVERYTHING) that it makes u more responsible then when u dont. Some people may disagree, and thats ok, its just my opinion. I think you are lucky and i hope u did learn a lesson. Be safe, be cautious, and always have fun, but there is a time and a place to do it. Good Luck, David.

I'm 17 and my car has been paid off since summer :) but anyways, congrats on the car, respect it and dont screw around too much...and dont get wreckless....its not hard to pay for mods when you dont have to pay for the car itself...

uhhh ok what part of he wrecked it did you not get man?? :eyes: this is why people give you crap about this being your first car man. i did the same thing. in 1997/1998 when i turned 16 and got my first car. 91 eagle talon. (i know it was gay but it was my first car). neways i wrecked it 2 weeks after i bought it. and just like you it was raining and then wrecked it again about 7 months later. do you know if they are gonna fix it or not? neways keep us posted and maybe this will be a eye opener to you and you'll learn something from it like i did. just be safe and take it easy man.....:( ;) and remember the car is replaceable. a life isn't. :)

Iam really sorry to see that, iam really hoping that its not totalled. I totally agree with 1QuickLT1. I was 17 when I got my SS and now 19, first time out trying to get used to it I spun it going around a corner, scared the shit out of me. I have been driving it responsibly ever since. I also have it almost paid off and have had a good enough job to make the payments and insurance (as well as mods). Iam just lucky that I didnt hit a curb or anything else, and screw my car up. Anyway hope everything works out for you and good luck.

Any word on the car?? Look man, all u need to do is get to know the car before u start wheeling it. Get a feel for how it handles before u go speeding thorugh corners. Get a good idea of its powerband, and even more important, learn how to drive it in the rain. I hear so many stories of young (16) year olds wrecking there cars (even slow ones). A LT1/LS1 is not slow for a 16 year old IMO. I don't know about you guys, but when i first got my Z it scared me, but after months of getting a good feel of it, i tested it out more, not so much as to over do it, but "test" it. I went out one night @ 3am (i was doing a project at the last mintue that was due the next day)for a break, noone was on rt. 32, i mean NOONE, so i drove up and down a few times to check the road out, then got on it towards my house, and then see what she had :) i was doing about 80mph coming off the ramp, then kept grabbing gears. Once i hit 5th i watched my mph raise to 155mph and i was about to redline, so i shifted to 6th, and eased off. I was content with 155+mph for the time being. All im trying to say is dont go out and start racing people or doing stupid shit when u dont know what your doing. Racing is awsome, but learn your car first....get comfortable. Remember, there is a time and a place to do(or not to do)everything. Good Luck -Dave

I couldn't agree more with that. I have higher monthly payments on my car than any of my friends do, and I also take the very best care of my car. My girlfriend and friends say I'm obsessed and crazy and I just tell them they would be like me if they paid as much as I do. Paying for things on your own changes your attitude quite a bit.

i agree with all of you. i've had to wait 3 years to get my car. insurance was WAY to high for a payment and insurance till now. neways i hope you can get your car fixed and back to you. mine's in the shop right now and it's only been there since tue and i'm about to die to get it back. couldn't imagine not getting it back. that would prob kill me. :(

hey everyone, im back, yeah half a year later i finaly decide to show my head agian, the camaro is totaled nd would cost to much to fix so yeah, thats dead, but my rents were cool and decided to give me another chance by giving me a well a rent loan, they bought it and stuff but i have to pay it off, i have to work around the house nd such nd keep a time card to pay every month off, which reminds me this month is coming to a close nd im behind on the money so i better get my butt in gear, but ya the new one is 98 z28 ... well its exactly the same as the last one execpt that its metalic navy blue or what ever they call it, it looks dark purple in the light so we nick named it plue, nd its a stick, that took a lil time to get use too, and no traction control, oh and the wheels wernt chrome. but ya, i got some pics some where and ill get them up as soon as i have time, but latly my car has been totaly stock, only put my xmas present (my borla exhaust) on last night i think it was, ya, she sounds nice now lol. and i got a speeding ticket, lets hope that will go away..... and then uhh i think thats it besides that me and my dad have been taking trips to cali to A & A corvette or what ever to get his new block in and then to portland to get it tuned and finalized, actualy we just got back a lil while ago. but ya schools almost over i get to be a jounor next year at a school close to home which will eather be all new or all new to me, kinda nervis but ya hopfully the car will get me some extra well coolness points. and all i can say is i definatly learned from this, im a much i dont want to say better but slower nd more carful driver and i dont go to crazy. lol well hardly ever

Congrats on the car now go find a big parking lot and see what it feels like to lose control from a stop and learn how to control a slide. That was the best thing I did with my truck when I was 16 that away I knew what it felt like to lose control because it happens to all of us.
