Question Cam 4.11 or 3.73

I don't know which cam I want to install in my 98 Camaro z28? I do drive it every day. I want to put either a 3.73's in it or 4.11's. Which would you guys recommend.

Mods I have:
SLP cat-back
SLP cold air
C5 crome corvette rims
Bilistein struts
Eibach springs
Alberner posi rear
SLP short throw
Dynoed 342rwhp and 405 at the crank

When I get gears I will go with 3.73's. I think it's thing of preference really. But let me say this: I've been in a H/C car with 4.10's and it was crazy! I still would prefer a gear that isn't so steep, like I said, it's personal preference...if it's not a race car.

4.10's or steeper.

I really don't see what this has to do with cam choice though, since you didn't list the cam you are looking at....

I have 4:10's and if I did it again i'd get 3.73's. 4.10's are great when you want to get on it, but for normal city driving there's a lot of shifting just to get to 45 mph. Sometimes I find myself going 1st, 3rd, 5th. Also, I go on several roadtrips a year and I'd like to keep the rpms a little lower for that. I like my 4:10's when i get stuck in traffic jams though cause you can go slow as hell without slipping your clutch so much.

Here's a question along those lines then....

What about 3.90's?

Which ever gear you go with make sure you get them from GM. Other brands wine really lound !Also make sure you take them to a place where they know what they are doing. Setting them up can be very difficult.

Funny thing - I ordered 4:10's and they came in a box marked 4:10's
but it turns out that they are 3:73's! I have a baby cam now and am
glad I have the 3:73's. Launching a cam car with 4:10's can be
a bit tricky. As well, you may have to feather the 1 - 2 shift a bit.

Then you move on to stickier tires, new clutch, new rear end etc.

For daily driving I love my setup now!

P.S. ran 12.80 @ 114.5 on a slippery track.

The 4.11 works real well in my '99 6-speed with stock cam, and I get much more use out of 6th gear now (>75 mph).

DEFINATELY get the 4:10s, i have them and love them. trust me, they are totally fine for everyday use. they make 6th gear actually useable. also get the G5X3 on a 114. this cam should get you a defiante 400rwhp with a proper setup and on a 114, it will have a smooth idle for a wicked cam. this winter im swapping out my 230/230 110 for the X3 either on a 112 or 114.

I've been thinking the same thing for a while. He asked which cam he should get, and then gives us two gears choices as options.

I thought it was hard to hook up with 3.42 gears with my set up. With my 4.11 I can't even start to hook up and I run Nitto Drag Radials in the back. When I had street tires I would smoke them through third gear. For street use, I would stay with what you got. If you plan on mostly getting on it at the track 4.11 are great as long as you run an ET Street. Preferably a 27 or 28 inch tire. I run 26 inch Mickey Tompsons and can't launch over 3,200 because I spin to much. The guys that run bigger tires are able to launch at higher RPM's. Good Luck!!!

Almost forgot! If you are running a stock rear it won't last with Drag radials plus the deeper gear is weaker because the pinion gear is smaller.

I put 4.10's in my car and it feels like a whole new car. I love them. But I am bearly modded. I don't know what it will be like when I get my cam and other mods. I am going to go with the FMS13 on a 114. Just my two cents.

what do you eventually want to do with you car? if you plan on having alot of h.p and trapping high mph, depending on where you shift, you might have to shift into 5th gear in the 1/4 with 4.11s.
