Default Limited edition non SS camaro package???

A buddy of mine, DJ, is looking into buying a 99 Camaro SS, and the seller is saying it has some "F5" package. I have never heard of this option/package before, so DJ called one of his friends and he said hes heard of it. He said its basically a non SLP camaro with the SLP "goodies" done to it, despite the fact the car is an SS. I'm, calling BS on this, but I wanted to see if any of you guys might have an idea on this. If so lemme know, cause I dont wanna see him get worked for more money than its actually worth.

I'm gonna have to raise the ol' BS flag on your buddy...if it is truly an SS, you'll be able to run the VIN through SLP and they can give you a build number. That is the only true way to know. If it had SLP options (different wheels, exhaust, suspension, etc), then it will also have a sticker inside the passenger side door listing those options.

If it is an SLP car it will have an SLP sticker in the door jamb with all the SLP option codes listed.

Not if it didn't have any SLP options (which could have easily been done). That's why I said to run the VIN...that is the only failsafe way to determine that.

Interesting, because I've heard of ones without options not having them as well. Guess it is kinda hit or miss with that...

Well, if it helps, I have a 98SS with no options and it does NOT have the door jamb sticker. But calling SLP, they do confirm that it is an SS #2025.

there was an F5 option but I thought it was only on the LT1 cars. I remember reading about it in a Hot Rod or Car Craft mag a few years ago.

Wasn't that the stripped down version ( kinda of a race version ) of the LT1, came with only the manual tranny, no air, no power windows, etc..?

There's a Service Parts sticker on the driver's side door with all the option codes. The SS code is WU8.

Thanks guys, particulary NataSS Inc. The SLP part wasnt the problem I had in question, it was the "F5" option, sorry if I made it seem like it was SLP. I tried searching for F5 camaros but couldnt come up with anything. I wonder if a dealer would know anything. Although my interest has been piqued now with the posts regarding SLP. Are some of you saying that not all SS's were SLP SS's? I thought the SS was an SLP option applied to Z28's, and is what made them SS's. Am I wrong? Thanks for the help once again!

O.K. When ordering a SS car, the dealer had to punch in the code: WU8. If the car was going to have ANY SLP OPTIONS AT ALL, the dealer also had to enter the code: Y2Y, which was the Camaro SS special SLP option processing code. (this required the WU8 SS Performance Pkg.) If the car order didn't have the Y2Y code it didn't go down the road after assembly to the SLP facility, where any ordered SLP options were installed. Only WU8 (SS) cars qualified for Y2Y (SLP) options. This is how the process worked with the '01-'02 SS cars. I know it also worked that way when I ordered my '99 SS car. In '98, things could've been a little different, also things were different w/'96-97 SS cars. But those 2 codes, WU8 and Y2Y, were the key for SS and SLP equipment for the '98-'02 LS1 years. WJ.

The trans am din't have it, it only came for the formula in pontiac camp, and in chevy camp i think it was available in both ls1 models ss and z. Maibe thats wha the f5 code stands for. Could anyone out there look and see what the striper code for the ls1 is.

I received a brochure from gm a few weeks from when I bought my car new. It has the F5 that you are referring to. The package is an apperance package that includes a body kit, a rear spoiler and and decals that run down the hood and trunk of the car, like SS decals. The owner probaley ordered that kit and put it on but its in a GM brochure so I doubt its from SLP.

To answer Dark Age's question, GM sold a lightweight version of the Formula and the Z-28 (and a very few SS's that were sold through SLP) as the 1LE option, which had 16" wheels, double-adjustable Koni shocks, harder bushings, manual windows, manual seats and no cruise control. My 1998 weighed 3331 pounds as measured at the factory on the build sheet. This is only about 32 pounds lighter, but buying a new 1LE was a bargain because the 1LE option added only $1100 to the basic price of a Z-28, and the retail cost of the Koni shocks (alone) was about $1200.

The F5 option was a ground effects package offered through dealers by GM.

That package was actually the F1 package. Its listed in the Camaro accessories brochure. http://www.gmgoodwrench.com/accessor...002/camaro.pdf

All 98 to 02 SS went to SLP to have the hood and spoiler installed. Even if it didn't get any other SLP options. Not sure about the the 97.
