Lightbulb GM or Cometic Head Gasket

Okay, getting closer to pulling the trigger on my project. Stock LS6 01 bottom end, stock exhaust and cats, unspecified mild cam, Katech ported oil pump, Accusump, Rollmaster Timing Chain, Comp Cams Hi Tech pushrods, Magnum Lifters, Stock Rockers, SLP Smooth bellows, Katech Throttle body, Black Wing, Programing to follow with AFR 205's, no cuts for higher CR with ARP studs to boot.

So, which Head Gasket should I go with? GM has atleast three gaskets for the LS6/LS1. The quality appears good, but why three gaskets? AFR only sells the Cometics. Cost is not an issue, but inquiring minds need to know.

Please advise

When buying gaskets you want to consider your quench area. This is the area from the top of your piston at TDC to the deck of your head. You want this area to be around .035-.o40". If your pitons are .005-.008 out of the hole and your head gaskets are .045" thick, then your quench is .037-.040". That's right were you need to be. The problem with the GM gaskets is that they are to thick. There thinest is .054, which will not provide an optimal quench. Cometic is the only company I know that sells a .045 gasket, which is what I would reccomend.

The gm mls gaskets are only 30 dollars for the pair and are .041 compressed. They are just as good as the cometics for a lot less. We put them on a 600 plus rear wheel hp car with no problems. They are a ls6 gasket. Save your money and buy gm.

The MLS gasket is referred to on this link as .060 compressed???

Where did you hear it is .041 compressed? I would love to find another option.

you are correct, the MLS oem gaskets are in the .054-.060 range. maybe he's confused and thinking of the felpro 1041 which is .041 compressed.

JRP- I'm not confused, we went to a chevy dealer and picked them up. We used a mic guage and measured .043. That should give .041 compressed. I will ask my friend for the part number.

Part numbers for the GM items? There's a couple of them and I was wondering which one's you've used and how they worked out?

I have found that the block grows a good 0.010" when it gets hot (lash opens up some 0.018") so to keep the quench right you would have to factor in that growth (set the cold quench closer).....
