Does placement of the cats affect sound?

Does placement of the cats affect sound? Stock location vs further down as with headers. the reason I ask is, I am doing true duals soon, and will have the stock manifolds and high flow cats, until I can get headers. So, if the HF cats are in the stock location, will the exhaust level be any quieter than further down? Thanks.
