Default Remove 4" Spintech Dual Muff and lose less than 1hp? Can it be true?

When looking for why my MTI 387 is a little (15-20hp) down on power, MTI dyno'd the car *after* removing the muffler, comparing it to before (with).

The car lost about 1/2 a hp (the lines essentially made one line).

Now... Im all about folks making good mufflers and great products, but Ive heard other folks mention that their Spintech muffler was costing them quite a bit. Jayson (MTI) actually removed the muffler assuming that this Spintech was costing big power just like every other one he's seen.

So the big question is... What's going on here???

I have MTI Stage 3 LS6 heads that flow about .73 E/I ratio, good old Grott 1.75" longtubes, a really nice 2x3 -> 1x4" Y that LG built for me (made huge benefits on the dyno) to a 4" Mufflex with Spintech 4" dual 3" out muffler.

Help? I dont believe my own numbers

You would be suprised how many quote opinions as if the were facts about parts they have never tested, even people who are in the business.

So... Im inclined to believe that it has to make SOME difference. If it was an awesome muffler I could believe say 6 rwhp or something.

But when I see 0, it makes me think that somethign *else* is wrong, and Im wondering what...

The splitcase Spintech is the artery clogging kind.

Probably a tuning isseu. Maybe youre running richer now that the exhaust restriction is gone, and the rich condition iskilling some of your power.

Could be... I wouldnt be surprised at all if the car had a few tuning issues. I need HP Tuner pretty badly. Ive got a wideband, so I'll mess with things and se what they show.

Im not having much luck finding a quiet efficient 4" muffler that fits well under the car. Im not too excited about giving up the 4" number, but if nothing else, I'll put on a 3" SLP dual/dual and be done with it.

I never dynoed your car with out the muffler Chris, just what, open header? That was some time ago, I do not remember the details.

Put it on the rollers and pull the muff there your self. Its a mufflex unit, not that hard to pull right?

I had a 3 bolt flange right in front of the muffler so when I wanted to run at the track I would just unbolt the muffler and get my extra power then

Yeah that was awhile ago... different engine even. Its tough to get all cranked up about it while it's monsoon season here in Portland, so I'll wait till I get HP TUner and my wideband hooked up and then take it to the dyno. The 3 bolt flange and the hangers should come right off then, and I can make sure the A:F and spark are all set for the car without the muff and see what it picks up. *shrug*

This really supprizes me, mainly cause I have spintechs. Do you think the loss would be as much with a dynomax bullet to replace it?

You could do a 4" Magnaflow muffler, I know those tend to be fairly quiet, certainly no louder than the Spintech.
