Default Should I be worried? (LS1 condition)

Hello,

I bought a LS1/T56 takeout from a 2001 Firebird. I'm going over the engine and I pulled off the intake today. I've attached some pictures. Basically, there's a lot of gunk, some oil, some water, and some other substances that I'm not familiar with. Should I be concerned, or just clean the thing up before I put the intake back on? Any suggestions are appreciated,

-ch

The pcv system will let oil in to the intake. You shouldn't have water in there unless you have a coolant leak.Mine didn't look that bad when i did my ls6 swap but my motor only has 30000 on the clock. Are you planing to go deeper in to the engine?

Looks ok not great. The water could be there because when u pull the motor you lean it way back and water that was up front has to go some where. I would pull the heads just to be safe. Should not take but 20 or some mins if you have in impact gun.

That area where all the gunk is located is not sealed by the intake. It is open to the elements. Everything should be fine. See the clean o-ring looking marks around the intake ports. The area inside of those are sealed by the intake. Nothing else is.

grime under the intake is pretty normal....severity might be a small issue, but my car was only driven with the new LS6 on it for about 2K miles, pulled back off, and it was already dirty....hence, why I bought a catch can

Well lets see. Yaa he will but it is worth it IMO. This way you know that there no **** inside the motor. Plus it will take an hour max if you know what u are doing and 2 hours if it is your first time. Better than taking a full day because u dropped the motor in the car and then had a problem and had to pull the heads. He could do some nice heads right now this would be the prime time to do it.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm not sure if I'll go under the heads, but I'm glad to hear that it's possible to see water and gunk along the seam between the heads and the block under normal circumstances. I'm going to do the LS6 PCV mod anyway and I'm assuming that it will reduce the overall oil consumption of the motor. Let's hope this thing works!

Thanks again,

-ch
