ok, i put the welded lifters so they wouldnt compress. then put the clay on the piston. bolted the head back down to the block. i used the stock double springs and bolted up the valve train.started twisting the crank over and boom , it wouldnt crank over any more. the valve came in contact with piston and the piston had not even reached top dead center yet. this is with my afr's milled .024 or 62cc with 2.05 intake valve and 1.6 exhaust. my cam in there now is the fm11 228/230 595 lift 114lsa. it looks like ill half to mill over .100 from the piston??? wich isnt good.it just dont seem right to me. unless im doing this wrong.

would the valve bent that easy cranking it over by hand??? i used a welded lifter so it does not collapse under the pressure of the dual spring with no oil in it

are you sure that the cam sprocket is not installed like one tooth off?

No. But a previously bent valve that was hanging open when it shouldn't could cause piston-to-valve interference.

I see you have HS rockers, are these the stockers modified? Are you sure the rockers are sitting on there pedestals properly, missing washers, shims or even if they are the stocker is the rocker perch bar installed?

Make sure you have a gasket in there.

At what length did you weld the lifter...Preload is supposed to be about 0.090", according to CraneCams...If you simply took an old lifter and welded it in its fully extended state, then you could possibly be lifting the valve an extra 0.090"...Which in your case would be around .675" lift...

yes i tightened the harland sharp rockers down. was i not suppose to. these are the 1.7 rockers. the cam is right. and yes i had the cometic gasket on

i have no clue. i had someone of this board wield up the lifter. maybe thats the problem.

I would check the overall length of the welded lifter vs. one in its free state...The welded one should be shorter by the 0.090" give or take a little...

You have to run "0" lash when checking with a solid lifter. Torqueing the rockers to 22lb-ft will leave the valve hung open if you are using the pushrods you run with your hydraulic lifters.

Re-check at 0-lash and make sure you didn't bend a valve!

Why are you doing it the hard and inaccurate way? Put those soft springs on and you can check them in about 10mins. It's easy and more accurate than clay. If you PM me your address I'll send you a pair. All you need to do is borrow a spring compressor to swap the springs. A 5 minute job.

if all you are doing is checking for clearance you may like what i have always done ...

i bolt the heads on without a gasket and turn it over by hand .... if it clears then you know you atleast have .040 or so ... of course you have to think baout rod stretch and valve float, but it works for me, so far

Try doing that on a stock LS1 where the pistons come OUT of the deck .007" and see what happens. The motor will not turn over as the piston will contact the head as it approaches TDC..
