Default Measuring PTV Clearance Question

I'm going to use the "lightweight spring and dial-indicator" method for measuring PTV clearance. I have a brand new set of .040 Cometic head gaskets.

When doing the measuring, do I install the gasket(s) and torque down the heads?

Will doing this ruin the gaskets or can I use them since the engine hasn't been run yet?

OR

Can I install the head without the gasket and use the .040 in calculating my PTV clearance values?

Thanks...

Just use an old gasket. No need to fully torque the head bolts when checking, just get them snug, and add a .005" safety factor.

I agree, but with the Cometics they are reusable, so you don't need to use an old gasket. Like he said, just snug 'em and use .005" safety factor. If you are doing what I think you are doing you should see ~.094" intake and ~.125" exhaust.

Thanks guys. Last question. Should I check PTV for both heads (to make sure they're both shaved the correct amount) or just the head for cylinder 1?

Couldn't hurt. And you would be certain.
