What causes MAF to go bad? (PO101)

What causes MAF to go bad? (PO101) Got a PO101 code again. This is the second MAF I've had in 20,000 mi. to fail. Anybody know what causes this. The only thing I know to do is put another MAF on and hope it lasts. Thanks for any advice.

Maf Po101 I use a paper filter and the MAF is stock and descreened. I have cleaned the three elements with contact cleaner and checked the elements with a OHM meter and they are OK but I keep getting a stumble and a SES light. Thanks.
