Default Crankshaft endplay

long story short, i've had this cold startup knocking sound in my motor. i've hated it and always thought it was a LOT louder then some of the piston slap i've heard in stock engines. so i get the 6speed out since i'm going TH400, and as i go to get the flywheel off, i notice ALOT of endplay. waay more then what i'd deem allowable in my eyes. Now what is considered "ok"? I haven't quite measured it yet, so i don't know specifics on my motor. Now could this be causing the audible knock at cold start up. AND if so, why would it/how could it, go away when the motor gets to operating temperature. I didn't do the install and I didn't do the engine assembly. It's an ARE 382 all bore. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi: I am not sure of the end paly in the crank but I would fix it before putting in a 400 Turbo. When I worked in the transmission shop I remember an Automatic Blazer that broke a front pump in the trans due to excessive end play from worn bearings in less than 1000 miles. If you can move the crankshaft end in and out and see movement it is usually to much. LOL

haha, that's what my thinking was. and that's why i'm asking before the trans goes in, i don't anymore problems(money) going on with it than necessary

Factory acceptable endplay is .007-.015 I think, but aftermarket stuff is looser than that.

That motor was a little noisy even new, it's loose for NAWWWS.

PSJ, I don't think that the aftermarket stuff is going bigger than what you have stated.

.010 is generally the high limit. If you can notice the endplay just by taking the trans out and say moving it with your hands.......that is probably not a good thing! .010 is pretty hard to judge with out a dial indicator. That could have been the source of your knock, perhaps.

anyways, i was told about the thickness of a fingernail movement. well this seems alot more than that. now don't get me wrong, it's not a full inch or even a half inch. but it's noticeable

Ya, it's hard to say but you will want to measure it with a indicator. Or use a set of dial calipers and measure your finger nail?? Just kidding!!

If its more than a fingernail, that's very likely much more than .010"
