Default Heads and TR 230/224

Anyone who's done these, what were your results??? Also, how did you prep the heads??? Mill em down any? bigger valves??? How much clearance does the TR 230/224 have??? Thinking about doing custom headwork but don't have time to drop the car off for them to check for clearances, just want to know some specs that will be close to optimal but conservative enough for clearances! Thanks..

As of right now, I'm doing a little over 400 rwhp with full bolt-on (no cats) on the TR 230/224... How much should I expect with heads? (full custom hand porting)

Couldn't tell you w/hand porting (maybe 15-20RWHP).....but, when I had my 99 Z, I had almost all the bolt-ons, the TR230, and some Patriot stage 2 5.3L heads. I didn't have the heads milled @ all. Car was in the 430s (I'd have to find the graph), before it took a **** about 6 weeks later due to um, how should I say...lack of quality control on the part of Patriot.

I think a heads/cam combo w/the 230 is a very good choice. The thing pulls like a raped ape after 3K rpms or so. Good luck.

Larry, you used some 5.3s right? I'll will be using stock 241 LS1 casts as a base... I'd like to bump the compression a bit but have NO idea what that will do for clearances on this cam... I know the cam isn't terribly large so there will be some allowance, just wondering how much??? Anyone know if i could get away with a .050" mill? and if milled, will this cam allow for larger valves??? let's say i could only do one or the other, what would you rather go with? more airflow or higher compression?

I wouldnt mill that much. You start getting into intake manifold fitment trouble with too much of a mill

The problem w/milling the heads is if you ever decided to go w/a bigger cam, your severely limiting your options! If you HAVE to mill, I wouldn't want to go bigger than .020.

yeh I didn't think of that... Although, I doubt i'd get a bigger cam... The more I think about it I really would rather not mill the heads just cuz I don't feel like gettin new pushrods and don't want to get "stuck" with no clearance one day maybe...

but what about bigger valves??? anyone think they're worth it? They're not too expensive but how much will the extra airflow equate to in the RPM band???

ok... just being meticulous the new million dollar question is this...

TR 230/224 cam, stock PR length

will 5.3 heads, milled .020, stock head gasket, 2.02 intake/1.57 exhaust valves clear?

YES. Talk to a guy on this board, his s/n is Verbs. He was running TEA stage 2 5.3L heads, I believed milled .030 & was running the TR230 w/no clearance issues. He put down 440/404 I believe at one time.
