Default Should I rebuild a forged 346, buy a 402, or buy a 396??

Well, here's my situation. Over the weekend I blew my motor on the spray. Got greedy , but won !! Anyways. As of right now I have 3 options, which if anyone comes up w/any other ideas, please let me know. Keep in mind I'm on a limited budget because I'm a 21 year old landscape business owner who has little income during the winter months . Anyway, Option #1. Rebuild my stock motor and forge it while I'm at it. For all parts and labor, my shop quoted me in the ballpark of $3500-$4,000 (which would include a new block). I could bump up the compression ratio a bit to gain more power and appease my N20, but then I'm still limited to total power output. Right now I'm at 430rwhp na with stock tb and ls6intake as well as high flow cats, so I've got a decent setup. I think I could easily hit 450rwhp w/higher compression and 90mm setup, but Lord knows I'd get bored sooner than later with that power. Option #2 Buy a forged LS2 rotating assembly brand new for $3995 plus labor to install. Option #3 Buy a good aquaintence's of mine 396 Lunati motor for $4,500. It's got Lunati everything and it has approximately 6,000 miles on it. I don't know much about 396's but I don't like the idea of stroking the block as far as you possibly can. Are they a good motor to go with? I don't here of many people going w/a 396. It would be complete w/everything all the way down to the oil pan and upgraded oil pump except for heads and exhaust (which I don't need). I believe he said he put down 530rwhp on a mail order crap tune w/an LS6 intake and tb. It also would come w/a fogger setup that would save me down the line because I was planning on changing my wet kit to a direct port anyways in the spring. With all that plus labor I'm looking at no more than $5,500. I don't know what to do If it were you, what would you do in my situation on a limited budget and why? Thanks a lot for the input. I know there are a lot of personal variables that are involved but based on what you know, what would you guys do between these 3 options? Thanks again

Another option I've also really started to like is build a 408. I know it adds weight, but throw that in the mix as well. I'm anxious to get started for the winter, just need to work out the details and figure out what's best. Thanks again

The SDPC LS2 402 is looking like a really good option and I'm really thinking of going that route myself. They say that their off the shelf LS2 short block can handle a 150 shot and the pricing is just under $4k I believe. Good H/C set up on the 402 and a 150 shot could make for a good relaible car that's quick. I'd like that LS2 built for a real shot of nitrous but I think that the price will be well over $5K for an O-ringed nitrous short block.

Yea, but I don't like the KS's not being there. And I've never been one to jump on the band wagon on a new product out. I always like to see what works and what hasn't worked after something has been out for a while. Take patriot heads for example. They were IT when they came out. Then people started realizing they were getting what they paid for. I'm not saying that all patriot heads were junk, but we all know that there were quite a few problems w/them. By all means, I'm not ruling the 402 out, just viewing things from both sides of the fence in order to get an all around view of what I want. Thanks for the reply

Yeah I hear what your saying I had those concerns too. If you use a good tuner the KSs should not be an issue. Many guys tune without them and have reliable set ups. With nitrous car I would be weary of not having them but I would try it anyway. If I where you I would look into your buddies 396 alittle more. Do alittle searching around on them, I remember reading something about oil consumptions issues with them but I can't remember the circumstances. If your open to doing an iron block HPE and APE are selling 408s for around $4-4,500. Both shops motors have been known to make power and handle a good amount of abuse.

Build an iron 408 if you don't mind the added weight.

Yea, I like the 408 quite a bit. And yea, I talked to APE for nearly an hour today, Great guys by the way. HPE was off to Indiana for a vendor something or other, so I plan on talking to them. Extreme Performance out of OKC actually does all my work and I couldn't speak highly enough of them and their work. They will be well known before too long!

Alrighty then lawn boy. My vote is to buy Clifford's motor. Did you see the video of it pulling the wheels when he shifted into second a few years back? Not skinnies, stock WS6 wheels... 700+ to the wheels is pretty damn hard to beat.

Just curious, what did the motor have done to it? Cause those are some nasty numbers.

I'd go a 408 with the iron block...i watched a turbo C5 put 14lbs boost and nitrous through its 408 like it was nothin....made some rediculous numbers as well
