Default oil guage/oil pump problem

while i was driving with my friend in his 98 Trans Am his check guage light suddenly came on along with a ticking noise that sounded like an exhaust leak and had no oil pressure. WE IMMEDIATELY pulled over and checked the oil....the oil was full considering he just got the oil changed yesterday. What could this possibly be??????? When the check guage light is not on the oil pressure is very low almost near 0. Could it just be the guage or is it actually the pump????

If you heard ticking, had no oil presure, and the oil level was fine then the oil pump is fryed or something stopped up the oil pickup.

He can try replacing the sending unit, but it sounds like the pump is history. Doesn't happen often, but it DOES happen with these cars sometimes. Seems like '98s were the worst.

Alright well hes driving it around and he says the oil pressure is at 45-50 psi at idle ? and 70 WOT ? Does this sound right ? Could this be the result of a cheap oil filter or incorrect oil ?

mabe...someone...put the oil filter on..and the rubber seal didn't come off on the old one..and they screwed the other one on..and its having a hard time sealing...maken the oil Light come on..ive seen this happen tons of times..my aunt's car...they forgot to make sure the rubber seal came off...and she got on the highway with both seals..and somehow it sealed good enough not to leak then

BOOM...NO OIL NE MORE>..the seal blew..oil sprayed everywhere she kept on driving with the oil light on and no oil left in the engine ..."Imagine That "

I'm sure u can figure out the rest.

The tick you hear is a lifter not pumping up...not great...but not the end of the world and certainly no cause for a rebuild. As long as you don't run it for an extended period of time without any oil pressure, the engine should be fine.
