I'm putting in a f14 in the spring. I have all the mods in my sig and was just wondering how long my stock transmission will last. I've read that a large cam puts alot of stress on the tranny. I have a large cooler but I don't know if that will be enough. The specs on this cam are 232/234 .598/.598 on a 112lsa. How long do you think the stock tranny will last? It has about 25K miles on it now.

Maybe if I never race it, but whats the point of that. I know that nobody knows exactly when it will go, but I would like to get an average idea. Like people that had their trannys die after big cams. How much did you race? and How long did it last?

Example: went to the track once a month and raced on the street a couple time a week. stock tranny started slipping after 6 months

Well... my buddy put a G5x3 in his car on a stock tranny and after three weeks and 1 track run... it started slipping pretty bad... woudnt have been too long before it died.

The cam has no effect on the longevity of the transmission.
It's the increased power output the cam provides that might be tough on the trans.
And thats only power. It doesn't matter if you put in a cam and other stuff to get 500hp or just drop in a new engine that puts out 500hp. Cam has no direct effect on trans life.

Well.. that might be true if we weren't talking about a computer controled tranny

Vacuum changes in the engine for so reason or another make these car do strange things with the tranny tuning.. usually affecting line pressure.

My advise. Have the car tuned by a reputable LS1 shop after the cam install.

When you say affecting you mean lowering your line pressure? Or raising?

Yea... thats assuming one were to do the job right and tune the car with the new cam. My reply was assuming all was done properly. I sure wouldn't drive a car after a cam swap if it had mushy shifts....but you never know what people will do I guess.

Ok, now were getting somewhere. So once tuned properly the cam has no effect on the transmission. It's the higher hp that starts to wear down the trans. So how about I change the question to: What is your transmission experience with cars making around 400rwhp? Can the stock tranny handle it? How long has yours lasted?

If you plan to drive the car aggressively, you need to plan to have the transmission serviced regularly. Automatic transmission have a number of wear parts that will eventually need to be service, just part of the game.

Lower weight and less abuse on the tranny will yeild longer life span.. but all will need at least clutches after enough abuse.

I wish we really knew. I've seen some screwy stuff..

IMO, if you plan to a rebuild the tranny, get a vacuum modulator. That helps eliminate one part of the computers areas of influence.

When my tranny blows im going with a TH400 with gear vendors or possibly a 80e. I havent decided yet.
