Default Anybody think a TCI SSF3500 converter too much.

I have a pretty much stock 2004 GTO, that I plan the following mods for.

CAI
Offroad midpipes(no converters) and catback 2.5 inch
ASP underdrive pulley
HP tuners/ or maybe a predator tuner
Ported throttle body by Janzter
TCI SSF 3500 torque converter
Trans-go shift kit
B&M trans cooler

So, do you guys think that converter will be too much for a stockish car? What kinda driveablilty are you guys getting with these converters?

Should work out just fine. That will be a pretty quick setup if you do all the mods you have listed!! Good luck!!

Most guys like the performance and are ok with the driveability. I've read a few complaints about it being loose. It will certainly annihilate street tires with any signifcant throttle application. I went with the 3000 for more tightness and to be easier on the tires.

Everybody is different. Personally, I think this conv. is almost too nice
As you can see in my sig, it is the only mod. I have on my car. I believe you will be VERY pleased with this unit. I was a six speed kinda person until I drove my car with a stalled auto. Simply no comparison. No downshifting to grab the next lowest gear to achieve your powerband, just stand on it!! Any good quality conv. can provide that but I have been very happy with TCI's customer service and a great product at an excellent price. I find this conv. the perfect balance for a mild street/strip application. However, if you do purchase the SSF3500, you need to add a good set of stickies to your list of mods, cause when you go to the track, its nothing but .

Any track times before and after the converter?

Have you had any trouble with this converter at all. I had read about a few torque converter clutch slippage problems on this board, kinda why I am getting the Trans-go shift kit, because it is supposed to have modifications to increase the apply strength of the TCC. I actually work on Ford transmissions for a living, never done a 4L60E though.

How about on the highway when you lean into the throttle and the TCC disengages, does the RPM really skyrocket, even with light throttle?

I have had zero problems. Track times before the converter were 8.7sh, afte r the converter, high 8.20 low 8.30's. I haven't had the time to get to the 1/4 mile. The rpm's go up as soon as the conv. unlocks but they dont skyrocket. I may be off here, as I have not actually checked the addl. rpm's during acceleration but I would guess under a load the engine rpm will increase about 1,200 to 1,400 rpm. Again, simply a ballpark and depends on load vs throttle. As I said earlier, it is a very streetable. Its just a matter of adjusting to slightly more throttle pedal input. I adjusted almost immediately but it takes longer for some people. Either way, it just gets more and more fun the more you drive it. Maybe I'm being a little overdramatic but it is just simply a blast to drive.

Add another 50% pleasure with a VIG 3200.
When you buy a SSF, you are buying off the shelf.
When you arder a VIG, they will ask you for shift rpms, gears, H/C etc... to match the shift extensions.

What kinda price difference are we talking about here? I was thinking about the TCI because I seen a price around $500.

Hey thanks alot for posting in my thread, I love to hear from the experts/people that actually make the stuff.

Believe me I will call when I get ready, but I have some basic questions that might help everyone else too.

What is $200 better about the Superstock 3600 over the Torque Thruster II 3300? Which one do you think would be better for my car and the mods I described?

BTW.......Great website with alot of great info.

94bamf,
I think that you'd love the SF3500 converter in your GTO. If you got one that had less stall, I think that you'd regret it later on. Just let me know if I can answer any of your questions.

With your "slightly" modified car, I would recommend the "street fighter"
by TCI instead of the "super street fighter". I have the super street fighter.
It's too much in my opinion for a STREET car. Anything under 40MPH
and floor it and all you do is spin.

The SSF 3500 is really about a 3800-4000 stall. On my car
it's a 4000 stall, you can see it on the dyno sheet. I have
a H/C car. Your car is "stockish" so it will be closer
to 3800. I would recommend the slightly lower stall
by TCI for a street car.

PM "jimmyblue" on here, he has that converter, I wish
I would have went with that converter. He is very informative.

As with ANY aftermarket converter you should have
sticky tires. IF you keep street tires, you are "wasting"
money on a conveter. The point of a converter is
in the launch and shift extension. To launch at a higher
RPM you will need stickier tires to take advantage
of the converter. The shift extension will automatically
be taken advantage of.

Get the TCI3000. "street fighter". It stalls like 3300.
In my opinion it's PERFECT for a street car.
It's lower STR rating is easier on tires on the launch
and more efficient on the higher RPM when compared
to the "super street fighter".
