Default What size dual exhaust for 440HP motor?

I have long 4-1 headers which are 1 5/8" into 2 1/2" collectors.

Should I continue the whole system at 2 1/2" dual or go 2 1/4" dual?

Engine makes 442HP at flywheel.

Also does anyone use/recommend Borla Pro XS mufflers for quietness and good performance?

2 1/2 if you're only going that big of collectors, should be good, borla xr-1 i'd say(the one that looks like an oval muffler not a bullet 100% straight through muffler)

What would be quieter, XR-1's or Pro XS mufflers?

I really want it quiet, out of the 2 quiet is a touch higher on the priority list then the performance list

2.5" collectors? That's pretty small... Anyway, don't go any smaller than 2.5"

Yeah, those headers are pretty damn small....definately 2.5 inch, but I would recommend bigger headers 3 inch exhaust.

Cool, 2 1/2" is staying as is.
I'm space limited.

Is 2.5" not too small for 440hp? Most people I see usually get 3" exhaust when they have about 380+rwhp, although they have 3" collectors.

Well most long tubes have 3" collectors. With just bolt ons 2.5' is fine. When you start hitting high hp numbers especially at the wheels, then it's time to move up. At least IMO.

1-3/4" primaries and 2.5" duals unless you're running 11.5:1 or better then go to dual 3"

He has 440 at the flywheel not the wheels. 2.5 will be alright for him. what headers do you have, flowtech?

I was told 2.5" will support 500HP, is that not true?

2.5'" exhaust can support 1000hp, but the same motor would make 1100 with 4 inch exhaust

Anything beyond bolt-ons and I would recommend 3 inch atleast to the x-pipe or crossover.

Ok, what I meant is it can handle 500HP with out causing any loss of HP or torque. So if you had 500HP, and went to 3", then you would see very little gain. I am curious as I am going 3" to the X-pipe, then 2.5" out the back. Next year I am planning on a cam with intake, TB, etc....So am I right about 2.5" supporting 500 with out any loss?

I hear these things about a 2.5" system all the time, and it seems as if everyone just says "If you want to make over 450 HP, get 3" duals." They usually don't offer any other proof though. I think it is one of those things that was started a while back, and has been taken as the gospel. Personally, I'd like to see back to back dynos of a 3" vs. 2.5" system at various power levels (like 350 RWHP, 400 RWHP, 450 RWHP, etc). I'd really like to see how much power is lost at each level between a 2.5" and 3" system.

I really don't think it would be that much. My exhaust being fabbed now is 3" into the x-pipe with the rest being 2.5" all the way out the rear. I really need 2.5" for clearance since my car is lowered. I have big HP goals in mind that will be reached with nitrous, but I'm having the exhaust made in such a way that I can drop a vast majority of it and just run some dumps on the headers if I ever feel like my engine is being choked.

I just like to think of it kinda like the cats vs. no cats debate. There are people out there with dyno proof that cats are really restrictive, and there are others with just as much proof that cats aren't really all that restrictive. Who do you believe?

It is kinda one of those things where you just have to take anything you find on here with a grain of salt. What works for someone may not work for others. There are people that drive huge cams daily and think it is acceptable. There are others that think a TR224 is too much for a daily driver. All depends on who you're talking to.
