Default Which stall for my daily driver?

I'm looking at a mild stall for my 00 Z28. It is my daily driver and goes through about 240 miles per week. It has the 2.73 gears and I'll be running only street tires. (I can't afford to run Nittos all the time) I don't want to be having to buy new tires every season with a stall that will simply fry them off, so I'm going to get a fairly mild one. I'll only be going to the track a couple times a year, so I'm not a hardcore racer or anything. I'm just looking for some better performance out of my A4 while still sticking with my gears. I'm thinking of going with a Midwest 2800-3200 with a 2.0 STR. People told me to stay lower than 2.0 because anything higher will get rid of my tires pretty quick and I won't hook up. I'd been looking at a 1.6 STR from Yank, but those are pretty expensive and someone else told me that even a 1.6 will still burn them off.

What do you think?

For crisp street manners, you want the highest STR you can get. Roasting the tires is a product of your right foot, not the converter. A low STR converter will feel a lot looser at throttle tip in compared to one with a higher STR.

You should shoot for something over 2.0STR and definitely don't be talked into anything less than a 3000 stall. Go lower and I guarantee you will be swapping it out for something looser in a matter of months. Even 3500 stall is very tame in these cars.

agree with what he said.
the TCI 3500/2.5 should be a nice converter with the 2.73's. I'm either doing that or a 3600-3800 here soon. good thing is with the 2.73's, we wont spin as much as someone with 3.23+ when launching. the SY3500 is also a nice converter if you're looking for a lower STR.

I am also looking for a mild streetable stall for my 2002 Camaro z28 a4 2.73.
I am considering a Vig 2800.

you're gonna end up wanting more than that. I've driven a TA, 4000 Yank (G5x3 cam and 3.23 rear) and been in a TA; 3800 yank stalled, cammed with 2.73 rear and they are very street able. it's amazing all that you can get by with with a lockup converter

Yeah, I'd looked at that as well. I hope you know that the Vig 2800 is actually more like a 3200 though.

No, it will just be a bit higher of a stall, despite the "2800" label.

This isn't what your want to hear, but go for a Yank SS4000.....Now don't go saying to yourself its way too big, he's crazy blah blah blah.

I have a SS3800 and I drive every week about 250 miles, going back and forth to school, I have 2.73 gears, and stock 16x8 tires.

Now for my performance upgrade. I cut .7 off my first trip to the track, went a 2nd time, but shut her down because it was about a million degrees out. Did that on BFG drags.

As for the drivability, its freaking insane! The car really does feel stock, and is extemely tight for a converter that large, I have let my friend with an MW3400 and 3.23 gears and he says his converter is WAY LOOSER than mine. I really wish I went with the SS4000, but I made the mistake of thinking it would of been too big, so I settled for the 3800

My opinion on the converters your looking at is don't waste your time and money

Yes, you should count in for getting a tune after putting in a stall. You'll need to change your shift extensions. (Instead of the RPMs falling way back down after each shift, they'll stay much higher up in the powerband)

I believe the shift extension is a product of the converter not tuning

Yes I got tuning, not sure about the exact details they did, but they got rid of most of the TQ management or at least adjusted it....couldn't be happier

I don't think they make an SS3200.....I suggest you look at a minimum SS3800, if I had a digital camcorder I would drive around and record it to give you guys an idea

I went to a local speed shop, and they recomended the Yank 3200, but I couldnt find it on Yanks website.

It was probably a regular Yank 3200, not the SS line.
Have not upgrade my tranny yet, unless you consider a tranny cooler an upgrade.
