Question New to forum with a lid question

First, let me say thank you. I am new to the forum but have been reading it for a few weeks now. I have learned alot from you guys!
Let me say I am not a racer. Been there and done that got the shirt and wore it out! Am 59 years old but far from over the hill. Have not owned a car since my 78 firebird formula 400 that I bought new.Since then all pickups. But had a strange urge and just purchased a 98 Z28. Mid life crisis I suppose. None the less I love it!

Now for my question. (Hoping it is not stupid) Has anyone tried smoothing the inside of the factory air lid? If so, Did It make any difference?
Again thanks for all the great info.

I'm sure someone has tried it before but aftermarket ones can be found for pretty cheap so why go through the hassle of trying to smooth out the stock one. Oh and welcome to the board.

Thank you for the welcome.
Well I don't want to spend a lot of money on the car and as far as the work, well it might take all of 20 minutes to do.

You can smooth the inside of the lid. I would be weary of a piece of plastic coming off and entering my motor from the shaved lid. The lid is after the filter and I would be scared to alter it cause anything I miss could enter my engine all ***** nilly. Also an aftermarket lid will do away with the little silencer thingies that hang just before the bellows and look goofy.

Search ebay for a lid you can find em for like 80 bucks brand new. Best cheap mod you can do to an ls1.

Look to the sponsors on the right -------->

Get a lid that is the cheapest. Also look in the Sponsor specials and GPs towards the bottom of the forum. A lid is a lid is a lid anymore, but is a great, cheap mod for any of these cars.

Hallelujah! There is finally somebody around here who is older than I am......Welcome aboard, Sir.

Lids are cheap and are good for 10 to 15 horsepower. Spend the money, you won't regret it.

he's about 22... at heart

remember when i called and he fired up his car just so i could hear what it sounded like... made my heart beat like a race horse.

get a lid, you'll love it. doesn't make it sound different or even give it any less street manners.. just more power

I slightly disagree, I did my exhaust mods first, and after the lid my exhaust sounded way better. I also like the slight sucking sound I hear at high RPM's. To me the lids have many advantages, it also makes the engine bay look less cluttered.

I'm pretty sure that the main benefit of an aftermarket airlid comes from the more roomy breathing area near the maf and such. I think a slight misconception is that the stock "baffles" or whatever rob all of the horsepower, instead of the constricted neck.

EDIT:

Ahhh, nevermind the hesitant attitude, I knew I was right!

Some proof from a knowledgeable person:

You can bondo the holes but you can't really fix
the P.O.S. stock design without a new mold. And
various folks have. Relative to the paper element
the stock lid is roughly 2X as much pressure drop
and the aftermarket lids are zero. The MAF, by
my measurements, was not quite twice the drop
of the stock lid (but close) and deserves to be at
least descreened, going by flow/pressure alone.
But I didn't have a descreened one to test at the
time to quantify the improvement there, and there
are other considerations.

The size of the outlet opening (aside from special
85mm-MAF-sized ones) is identical to stock; it's
just elimination of stupidities in between the filter
and the outlet.

Just..go with the...aftermarket air lid i got a TSP Lid..for $75..worked great..also helps to throw a K&N Filter in ther coned one rather than factory box filter.

Just my .02 cents.
