Default Tyre size for 17 x 9.5

I have 17 x 9.5in rims on the rear of my Supra which currently have 275/40 17s. Due to the fact that I only use the car as a commuter and I am looking to save some money, what would be the narrowest tyre I could fit without compromising safety. I think the origional size tyres were 255/40 17s. What are the pros and cons of a narrower tyre?

You probably could go with a 255 or 265 but by doing this you'll lose major traction because first there is less contact with the road and they're going to be narrower. Now if you ran the narrow tire on the front only then your car would pick up a little better handling with the reduced side wall flex.
