Default Kooks vs. QTP Headers

I'm looking at finally getting headers for my Trans Am when the bonus money comes in. I have narrowed the search to Kooks or QTP. I know they are similar as far as quality and horsepower, but I have some questions:

1. Are the 1-3/4" ok even if I move up to a 408 or 427? Should I go with 1-7/8"? Or stepped headers?

2. Kooks have the stepped headers, but have 3-1/2" collectors. I have read that they don't fit well with the stock K-member. Is this true?

3. QTP have the merged-collector. Is this any better than the Kooks? Does anybody have any dyno's comparing the two on the same car?

4. I have removed the EGR on my car. Should I just order the 2001+ headers? (I have a 2000 Trans Am)

Thanks all!!!

Brian

Get the race headers (either brand) with no AIR or EGR.

1 3/4" great for stock cubes, even strong heads/cam.

If you're gonna go 408 or 427, then get new headers when you go that route.

I've got the 1 3/4" QTP High Velocity Merge LT's (swapped out some SLP's). No numbers yet. Fitment and quality is top notch.

You can't go wrong with either brand.

just get race fitment, I recieved my kooks not too long ago ordering from SDPC2000.com(ordered over phone on thursday got em the next wed), i'd say for now you might as well just get 1 3/4, especially if its gunna be quite a while before you get the stroker, as long as you have EGR and AIR removed you should be fine with getting the race fitment, unless you get the high velocity merges i dont think the collectors are any different really, i'd say just go with whichever you can get cheaper and just go 1 3/4 for now.

1.If you go bigger cubes get bigger headers
2.i doubt it...they have good clearance
3.i believe the merge is good for a couple more hp
4.get the race headers...they have no emission hook-ups

I've been debating the removal of the AIR system. What are the drawbacks to doing this? Is it "legal"? Like, if a cop was being a ***** and looked under the car and saw no cats, would I get fined? Could I get away with it emissions-wise? Just curious!

No it's not legal, and yes if the cop wanted you could get fined.

^ and that's a risk that many of us take.

As for emissions, someone from his state please chime in.

The only emissions we hae to pass here in Texas is an OBDII test. Of course I supposed if you got a jerk for an inspector you could still fail the visual because in Texas you can't alter the location of emissions components. No one checks though, as long as the light is off you will pass.

FWIW, Federal laws require catalytic converters and prohibit "relocation" and alteration of emissions equipment, so this isn't just a concern in Texas, but nationwide...

Thanks for all the replies. I believe I'll keep Johnny Law happy and get the emissions legal headers and keep the cats.
