Default Anybody ever put a cam in with stock manifolds?

I am curious if anybody has ever put a cam in a bolt-on LS1(F-body, Vette, GTO, etc) with stock exhaust manifolds and got good results, or bad results for that matter?

What cam did you run, dyno results, etc.

Thanks...

I helped install a cam in Orangepeels car and he had stock exhaust. It really choked of the cam. You could here the motor fighting to the the exhaust out. it was a comp 224/224 on a 114lsa

i wouldn't do it. ive heard of a catted y pipe costing a cam car 15rwhp over a ory pipe... much less stock manifolds.

I ran my 230/232, 573/575, 111 lsa. with stock manifolds for 8 months. I did port and polish them though. I dyno'd at 370 rwhp, and I have a A4 with a high stall torque conveter! My best 1/8 mile run was 7.58 with the stock manifolds and full weight, I have not been back to the track or dyno with my new Pacesetter headers.

Let me add, I also had gutted cats and a cutout. So with the ported stock manifolds, it flowed pretty good!

Well, my plans are for a mild 218/224 114 comp cam through the stock GTO manifolds, but I plan on doing the rest of the exhaust, no converters, catback. I was thinking about buying a set of stock GTO manifolds from one of the guys that installed longtubes already, and seeing if I could clean them up a bit. I just don't know if I could really improve much by porting them, I have heard the GTO manifolds are better than the F-bodies, but I have no proof of this.

I don't know much about the GTO....but, the '01 & '02 f-body exhaust manifolds were greatly improved over the '99 & '00s. When Brain2001SS heard I was planning on keeping my exhaust manifolds, he suggested to have them ported. Many people on this site said it would do no good on the 2001 and I would be a wasting my time. But.....they were wrong! Gut the cats and a cutout makes a pretty good flowing exhaust! I am sure I have picked up quite a bit with my headers now, but the stock one did pretty darn good! Surprised a lot of people!

I did my cam with stock manifolds. It's a small cam so I figured it would be okay. However, I did port and polish the stockers. I also added an RT/y and cats. I was looking for a good increase in low & mid-range power (which I got). I might have done LTs but I'm looking to stay close to stock sounding.

i have 00 ported manifolds on my 99 ls1 with the hotcam. i have always heard that it is better to have a more restricitve exhaust with cams that have quite a bit more of exhaust than intake 219/228

My car ran through the timing gate at the Bonneville Salt flats at 161 mph with just a TR224 114, stock exhaust manifolds and cats into an SLP Loud Mouth catback. (two mile course, not quarter mile) This was on rough salt, and I still had some throttle left. The cats were burned up after three runs, though.

I noticed a significant gain when installing my cam w/o headers, but then when I did put in headers, the gain was about equal to that of the cam.

I've said this 10000 times....

Putting a cam on an otherwise stock setup is like trying to build a house from the roof down.

Install headers, a converter, or something of the sort before installing a cam. You'll get more out of a converter on a stock car than you will a cam. Wait until the motor is breathing CORRECTLY before doing internal work...

My 2 pennies.......

I respect your knowledge and experiance, but in this instance I differ with you some what. He didn't mention if he has an A4 and if so the torque converter would be the first thing to do. He did say he had bolt-ons and would be maximizing his exhaust which included no cats and "cleaning up" the manifolds (porting?). I had good results with this set up. For someone looking for the "stock" look and sound it is a good option.

the first mods to any car should be to breathe. Basically saying that how would you feel to sprint 100 yards breathing through a straw. Cam an engine and that's what you have.

216/224 113LSA installed with Patriot Stage II, nice increase but only came alive after Blackwing, LS6 manifold, LT headers with high flow cats. Now I need a new set of rear tires.
