Gears & Axles - Axle Identification

How do I tell what gear ratio is in a rear end if it is not in the car? I know they have castings on them....I have searched and found production codes on this site, but not any way to I.D. what's inside. Any insight?

count the number of teeth on the ring gear, and divide by the number of teeth on the pinion gear.
