Default 98 operating temp...

hey guys
i was just wondering what the 98's temp is normally. mine seems a little funky. whenever im moving it barely gets above 100 and when sitting still it gets up close to 210. also i have never heard my fans come on... is this normal for these cars? thanks a bunch.

My LT1 car always ran pretty hot, however I haven't notice it much on my LS1.

On 98's the Temp guage is actually functional, unlike 99+(fake, kinda)
The first line on the bottom left of the dashboard is actually 160*, unless you have white faceguages, they are misprinted for 98's
180* or so would be normall cruzing on the highway when its cool outside. The pcm won't turn on the cooling fans untill 226*, typically when sitting in traffic. The low fans are kinda quiet, you can't hear them while driving the car or idling unless you pop the hood. this is normall but the high temps bothered me so I tuned my car and had the low fan come on around 190 and high at 200, 98's have a 180* tstat. The guage hung around 180-90 in any weather, city or highway. Since then i've installed a 160* tstat so i've lowered my fan settings further

Exactly.

With stock tuning you'll probably never hear the fan on high speed unless it's 80+ outside and you're in traffic (or you've got the A/C on).

My '98 gauge starts at 160*. Are you saying the '98 whiteface gauges are misprinted? Otherwise it must be on a certain %. Otherwise , it's nice having a functional temp gauge.

I think he meant the whiteface gages were misprinted. My stock '98 gage also starts at 160.

They basically have three readings. Cold, operation temperature, and overheating. They act like an "idiot light". The 98's gauges are all accurate. Well, as accurate as the stock gauges can be expected to read.

If you autotap it and it is actually reading that low, then your thermostat is probably stuck open. Temps can go all the way up to 230 with the stock fan settings. Pretty weak.

Yep, I always here people say mine always holds perfect temp at 210*. Its physically not possible. A lot has been discusses as to why GM turned the temp guage into an idiot light for 99+. Some say because fluctuating temps scared customers, others say cost cutting, I bet its both. lol
