Default th400-forward vs reverse valve body

Which one is better suited for a street/drag car? Is one better for high power than the other? I know the reverse has no engine braking, so what happens if i let of the gas just coast like in neutral, what about downshifting ive been told you shouldnt unless stopped?

Thanks for the help

Chuck

If you go over say 35-40, coast and downshift into first knowing you're going to end up in first when you stop then you run the risk of over running the direct drum (which would normally be stopped by the front band) and this will sling oil off the sprag or roller clutch and it could fail due to lack of oil.

You can downshift, coast forever in third, etc. But don't make a habit of running fast and downshifting into first or second and coasting to a stop.

Who sells vb with compression braking and would this be better for a street/strip car? Could i downshift and coast with this set up? Can i still have a transbrake?

Thanks

what about when you are crusing at say 30-40 in third, then start to slow down to say 10-15mph, do you downshift to second or leave it in third?

Since my car is mainly a racecar these days, I went with a rev vb cause I don't want any chance of missing 3rd on the 2-3 shift and going into N! On the jug, that would be a very bad thing to do. I've seen even the best of shifters have plates fail or allow a missed shift - I'll live with the downsides on the street for the security on the track.

Rossler sells a TH400 that has the 2nd gear drum banded to let it hook up like this. You can downshift just fine with it like this. In fact, you can be going 55 in 3rd, downshift and rocket away. It would sort of look something like this if you did downshift like that.

That's all motor versus a complete stock car with a Incon TT kit (around 600+ HP/TQ and 3800 pounds).

A gated shifter will also make a reverse manual very nice. I like mine a lot.

Important thing to know...If you want a transbrake you HAVE to get a reverse manual vb.

compression braking means the 400 retains the bands used for down shifting. in fact that is why a 400 is called "dual range". one path for power and the other for compression braking. l have such vb's

Is there any reason one would not want to have compression braking in 1st and 2nd?

To get to neutral without it down shifting like a stock trans where the car would slow down and the rpm would go up when it went through second and first. Thats on a reverse pattern.
Thats what I think anyway.
