gasket difference?
What is the difference in gasket compressed thickness between the graphite and metal ls6 gasket? I have some .040 shaved heads and and really wondering if I am getting too close to my pistons with my 227/227 .564 .564 lift cam it is on a 114lsa. I know it will be pretty close but will it be too close?

I already have these mls gaskets from gm, I just got the part# off this website somewhere....didn't know there were this many types of gaskets and thicknesses. I am just worried about my p/v clearence. I would like to run as high of a comp ratio as I could though.

use checker springs and degree cam, just completed a h/c install on my 04 vette and with 2.055 intakes, had .095 clearance on intakes with pistons out.007 and using mr gasket head gaskets .042 compressed. i run the crane 1.8 rocker kit, lift with boss 2 cam works out to be .590. you really should check p/v, every case is a little different, should try to keep squish between .035-.040.

Were your heads milled any?

You should use the gaskets you have to check clearence with. Install you a couple of check springs on 1 cylinder of your heads.(intake and exaust) Then lightly tighten them down, with gaskets in place and clay on the piston. Once they are seated, then roll the motor over. You can now remove the head and use a dial caliper to measure your clearence. If you have enough room, a ,040 or .045 gasket will be perfect depending on how far out of the hole your pistons are.

I am not a huge gearhead, I am mostly just getting into this but love to learn this stuff. I have no idea what you are talking about checker springs. I take it they are kinda really loose springs that are for mock-up purposes kinda? The gaskets I have are part# 12589226 I take it these are the mls gaskets. To tell you my engine building experience, I had never changed my oil in my car till I did my own cam swap...lol I am one of those people that could be really dangerous if not guided..... So basically just take some modeling clay and check my clearence with my setup and keep it within .040-.050 p/v? How would I simulate the right gasket compressed height without torqueing down all my bolts? I really don't want to tear up a new set of gaskets to remove the metal shims either.

By checker spring, I mean light weight low pressure springs. This way they don't compress the hydraulic lifter, giving you a more accurate reading. As far as gaskets go, you want to keep your "quench" between .035-.040". Quench is the area from the top of your piston at TDC to the bottom of your head deck. Most LS-1's are .007" out of the hole, so if you have a .045" thick head gasket, this gives you a .038" quench. You can check your clearence like you said. Just place some modeling clay on the piston around the area were the valves will come down. Set your gasket on, then the head tightened down till good and snug. Then place your rockers on and set them for "0" lash. Tightening them to 22 ft. lb's will compress your spring and you don't want that. Now you can roll your motor over until you see both of those intake and exaust valves make there way up and down. You probablly won't even have a mark on the exaust side. On th eintake side, you can use the "pin" end of a dial caliper to measure the thickness of the clay in the indention made. You want to keep your piston to valve clearence around .090-.100, but I've seen some run .080 and not have problems. When it comes down to it, if you have room, get a thinner gasket. Preferablly a ,045".

how much are the Mr gaskets ones? I would like to get my quench down to .035 if I could. I don't know if I will be able to though with these heads shaved .040 and my cam.
