Default NHRA rules for 1/8th mile

The class I am running in next year only runs the 1/8th. My question is what are the rules as far as the NHRA and the 1/8th. The rulebook states everything through the 1/4.

I mean a 5 second car in the 1/8th is a 8-9 second car in the quarter are those the rules you HAVE to follow? I can get out of the throttle at the 1/8th in a 5 sec car and coast across the 1/4 in 12 seconds.

Get what I am getting at here?

Again I WILL be getting all the safety stuff to save my *** just wondering what is REQUIRED.

Thanks
MIke

the NHRA rulebook usually has 1/8 equivalents in parenthesis next to the 1/4 mile rules

I'll check mine when I get home tonight

Yes, if you run the 1/8 equivalent of a full 1/4 mile pass then you need the required safety that goes with it, regardless if you let off after the 1/8 5 second pass. You car has the potential of running a 9 second pass, this is for your safety, and possibly others as well.

Here is a brief list:
  • SFI Approved Balancer
  • SFI Approved Flexplate/Flywheel
  • SFI Approved Trans Shield
  • SFI Approved Bellhousing
  • SFI Approved Flexplate/Flywheel Cover
  • 10-point cage (cross bar behind the dash if firewall is not unmodified OEM)
  • Battery cutoff switch (even if the battery is in the OEM location)
  • NHRA License
  • SFI Approved (3.2A/5) Clothing
  • Window Net
  • 5-point harness

Exactly. I believe NHRA and most other organizations use a 1.57 multiplier to figure 1/4 mile time from 1/8 mile.

Ex. 7.52 X 1.57 = 11.81

Ex. 6.70 X 1.57 = 10.52

At Irwindale if you run a 6.399 or faster your car is considred a 9 second 1/4 mile car, and at 6.999 your car is considred a 10 second 1/4 mile car.

Quicker than 6.40 in the 1/8 will grant you the 9s in the 1/4 requirements.

George, you forgot the fun stuff.

When running 9s or quicker, you'll need an NHRA license as well. This requires:

-a physical exam (**** probe not optional)
-licensing runs (6 total if done right on each run, must have 2 current licensed drivers to witness and sign off on your form). If the car does run 9s on your 2 full passes, you must keep making runs until it does. This can be done in more than one visit, but within a limited time frame.

IIRC, NHRA uses the following guidelines

6.39 = 9.99
6.99 = 10.99
7.35 = 11.49 (2005 rollbar requirement)

Here is a list of conversions that NHRA uses:

6.000=3.66
7.490=4.49
7.500=4.50
9.990=6.39
10.00=6.40
11.49=7.35
11.50=7.36
11.99=7.49
12.00=7.50
13.50=8.26
13.99=8.59
14.00=8.60

I just got done putting together a guide for the new 2005 NHRA rules today they include the 1/8th mile times also here is the link:

technically, you need to be legal for the 9s then...but 1/4 tracks rarely check your 1/8 ets. if you pull a 6.39 at an 1/8 track...they'll check for sure I bet
