Default 17x9.5 wheel

Are we able to run a 295 series tire on a 9.5 inch wheel? Lets say i have a 17x9.5 z06 wheel and want to mount a 295/40/r17 goodyear GS-D3 tire. Can this wheel handle that? Or by chance can i go wider on that wheel?

i work at a wheel and tire shop and have seen people run a 315/35/17 on a 17x9.5. it bulged out a lot and is not exactly safe. it has been done before though lots of time. the guy with the mustang that did this has had no trouble at all with it. the tires he was running were BFG drag radials, so they have a very wide tread width. i think a 295 would be fine. a 315 would be okay too, but like i stated before, its not exaclty safe.

What are the safety reasons that make this not safe? And does it look real goofy?
