Nittos: Why so cheap?
Why are Nittos so much cheaper than most other tires?
Because they're drag radials and wear out fast?
I know, a newbie question, but I don't have anyone else to ask.

I always asumed that they where cheap because they are a throw away tire. I get about 15,000 miles out of the fronts and probrably 40-50 passes out of the rears.
They are also probrably cheaper to produce than a regular tire. Think of some of the R&D and production costs that go into the tread technology of a regular all around tire or rain tire. Nittos are pretty simple and to the point.

Are they a practical choice for a daily driver? I mean, i know they're not gonna last too long but 15,000 miles is pretty good. How long will the rear last if i dont go to the strip?
Are they safe to drive on for every day use? I know I should be extra careful on them in the rain but are they just unable to be used in the rain or what?

I have the drag radials on all four corners and the car handles great, well it did before I pulled the sway bar and went with drag shocks. Before the 555RII came out guys where actually using the drag radials for Autocross and road racing events. But since the 555RII is out with the stiffer side wall you migh as well just get those for the front (should be the same price as the 555R). I think that they are perfectly practical for a daily driver and I have used them ever since my car had about 3,000 miles on it. I'd expect to get 10K+ out of the rears not beating on them.
As far as the rain. Horror stories are out there but I have never had an issue with them. I actually find that it takes alittle effort to break them loose in the rain but, I wouldn't be doing 75-80mph on the highway in the rain with them.

`02 WS/6 do you want a tire for a daily driver??? Because if you do the NT555R II would not be a good choice. For autocross they are great, and for drag racing the NT555R would be good. But for a daily driver get the NT555 with no R. I have those on my car and so far they have been a great tire, wet or dry. I had them on my mustang and had around 19,000 on them when I sold it and they were still in excellent condition. As long as you dont do any burnouts or rag on them they will get excellent mileage. I believe they have a 300 Treadwear with AA traction and A temperature.

Aren't the 555's just regular street tires?
I was gonna go with the 555rII's because they were a soft race compound.
My only concerns were how long they would last and if they would be safe to drive on in the rain.
SInce they would grip so much better, i figured that the short life span would be worth it, I mean they're almost only half as much as the regular 555's too. If they're about half as much and the wear out a little faster then they seem to be worth the money.
Is there something that I'm not seeing here?
By the way, the look of drag radials on the street is awesome and worth something in my opinion also.
