Talking Finished up the wheelwells for the 28x10.5x15W tires...

My friend who's one helluva welder (who did my rollbar) came over and we worked on finishing up the wheelwells.

This is what a stock wheelwell looks like (in the front area)

That poor wheelwell didn't know what was coming

First, I had cut away areas that hindered me from putting the tire on the car(which I previously posted)

https://ls1tech.com/forums/drag-racing-tech/272479-wheelwell-cut-28x10-5w-tire.html

Though this worked, it left areas that were still relatively close to the side of tire. If you took a turn too hard (at the return road), he was worried it would rub. So...we cut into the wheelwell, and beat it into the car

We then fabbed up some patch panels out of 22 ga steel sheet (similar size to what was in the car) and started mig welding them in place

Also cut out the whole area where the bumpstop was and reinforce the two areas with some 1/8" thick steel sheet. Sprayed on some undercoating and finished them up

Looks good. What offset are your rims and are you concerned it will rub on the outer fender in the front. That's where mine were rubbing.

so this is a legal modification for not putting any mini tubs on for the stock classes?

did you have to midify the fender lip at all or did the tire fit in there with out modifying it?

mine look to have >1" of clearance. MT says up to 1.5" of growth which would be 0.75" per side. its close but should be ok.

general rules say this:

Mini-tubs are allowed. Rear frame notching for tire clearance permitted
They fit without modifying the fender lip, but I beat the front area to keep it form rubbing when the tires grow.

I don't know man, sounds like you're assuming that .75" growth will be equal front to back during the whole run. Now someone please correct me if I'm wrong but during hard acceleration with a wrinkle wall tire most of the growth would be towards the front of the tire (think about how the tire looks during launch) maybe growth during launch is the wrong word but the front part of the tire will be forced foward. And during decceleration the back of the tire would project back more than the front. The most "equal" growth would be duing the middle of the run.
I have a Trans Am also and with those same tires they rubbed "ALOT" front and back. I'm just sayin' cause I saw what it did to my outer fenders and how much rubber it took off those tires on just one single run.
Just be carefull Fireball, I've seen you drive.
