Default Can't keep tranny cool, please help!

My A4 has a Vig 3200 stall and is otherwise stock. I recently installed a Autometer Trans Temp Gauge, big mistake! My trans temps are fine while on the highway, between 110 and 150. In town though the gauge usually reports between 180 and 250 and to be honest it is freaking me out. I had a Hayden cooler on it and thought maybe I needed a better cooler so I stepped up to B&M 24,000 cooler, same problem still exists. I have the cooler set up with the line comong off the top of the radiator to the cooler then out of the cooler into the all metal trans line under the front of the car. If anyone has any ideas I am open to them and appreciate the help.

I've had the car tuned off dyno. Do you think getting a 160 degree stat would make a difference?

I have a th350 3 speed with 3.73 gears and 28" tires in an s10 v8 and my tranny has never gotten to 165, it has gotten to just under that a coupleof times but that was from doing 100mph down a highway for a while. I have a deep pan and 2 24000 gvw b&m tranny coolers, in the city it doesn't heat up to over 160 in heavy traffic either. My engine oil is another story though, it hits 230 -240 on the highway at 62mph.

I was thinking about doing the deep pan, so that is definitely in the works. Never thought about running 2 tranny coolers in line, might be worth looking into.

my trans temps (via hptuners) stayed at 189* (after a while of beating on the car). 160* t-stat, fans on at 160*. im not worried about it, but only because there is nothing i can do and my coolant temp stays right about 175-185* all of the time so it isn't far off on the trans temp.

does the trans slip or shift odd? im not sure there is much you can do about it if you already have a cooler, you shouldn't have to run 2 or anything but if you are that worried that is an option (2 trans cooler).

btw ssf3800, 2.73 gears, b&m 24000 cooler mounted "dope" style

*k9 pusher, you went 12.28 @ only 110mph? what 60ft. that is a very good time for your modifications and trap. you can take this question to pm's if you don't want to clutter up your thread.

yes, get the 160* thermo, a deep pan would help too. Can you get some pictures of how/where the cooler is installed?? If I ever got in traffic with mine I would try to keep my distance from the person in front of me.

If you think its bad now wait till its 90* outside in a couple months.

Trans doesn't seem to act any different than before other than the obvious due the stall

The cooler is mounted in the center of the AC condenser like most peoples. I can keep my manual fan switch onhigh and still watch the needle rise. I'm kinda hoping I have a screwed up gauge to be honest. I'm going to ATAP it this weekend to see. I don't even want to think about summertime!

id run about 180-220 on the streets (with my vig). my cooler was mounted horizontally too (like laying flat on the street, not on the radiator). i got a deep trans pan and noticed that it stayed cooler a little better. get a 160 thermo too. hot coolant running right next to your trans fluid sure doesnt help matters.

You also could mount a 10" fan on tranny cooler if all else fails.

I appreciate all the suggestions ya'll. I think I am going to try the 160 stat and a deep trans pan. If that doesn't help I guess I will try the fan mounted to the trans cooler. If anyone else has any input please throw it out there as I am open to any suggestions to help cool the damn thing down.

That seems to be a key problem. The fans should be cool air through the cooler. I could see my temps drop soon after my fans kicked on. Make sure you don't have a clogged cooler line.

See what temp ATAP shows.
