Default SOTP between 2.73 & 3.73

Just wondering what the seat of the pants difference is between these gears. I know the 3.73's are better but not sure of the actully difference in performance. The car came with 2.73's but will be switching when i get the rearend.

To sum it up HOLY SH** I just got mine done 1 1/2 ago just now strting to get on it. The difference is awsome I got the thick gear from richmond. I got a littler gear wine but not bad. I was worried at first becuase it shift so quick under normal driving. I used HPPIII for the programming (I know they suck) but it worked. The only thing I'm not liking is the downshifts. HPPIII isn't the best. Once I'm above 45-50 mph It will not downshift to 2nd. It will if I shift it manually. I also get about 200 miles to a tank of gas. I'll tell you what, the downshift from 1-2 just under 20mph is f***ing nuts and burn the tires. I make 311 rwhp And am having traction issue now. So if you make more you might want to go with 3.42 better milage to. Any of ? pm me

I have an A4 and had 2.73 then i swapped to 4.10... if your easy on gas you can pull 260 miles per tank easy... my first week i also got 200... I just put M/T DR's on my car and I can almost pull the front wheels... in about 2 weeks ill be doing the Yank PT4400... that should pull em up! do atleast 3.90's for an A4 and 4.10's for a stick I'd say... if you want performance then who cares about gas mileage?

I don't care about gas mileage at all but I don't want to lose all drivability either. Aren't 3.90 gears alittle rough for daily driving? I always heard no to go above 3.73 with an A4.

I have an A4 with 4.10s and i love it. how would the gears effect daily driving... i thought it would just hurt your MPG.

If you do a lot of longer distance highway cruising, 3.42s are a good gear. 3.73s and 4.10s are difficult to launch on the street with a big converter. From a dig (without slicks), I was fastest when I had 3.23 gears and my YTP 4000 converter.

I do a 30 min drive (60 round trip) every morning to work with 4.10s... mostly I-state... but he is right if you do 4.10s be ready to get some drag radials!! i have a stock converter right now with the M/T DR's on 16 in factory rims and almost pull the front tires with out a burnout! I bought 2 extra rims off of ebay that match my factory ones and mounted drag radials on those that way i can change them off and on... it only cost me 157$ shipped.... but you will have to have DR's if you wanna hook up... also look into some chassis and suspension mods to help you hook...

do the 4.10's and love it!

This is a tradeoff thing. With 3.73s, you turn 2500 rpm at 72 mph. It actually make your car pretty responsive at part throttle at 55 mph in traffic. RPMs with 4.10s will be almost 10% greater.

The real issues are 1) whether you can put the power to the ground with more gear than 3.42s, and 2) where do you race from.

Like Ty, I keep DRs on the car all the time (except for late Nov - early March since nittos suck in cold weather and snow) and use slicks at the track. W/O the nittos, my street 60' times would suck.

The other thing to keep in mind is the starting and ending speed of your races. A 2.73 gear car is great in a 70 - 100 mph race since it can be done all in 2nd gear. With a decent stall, a 60 - 100 punch is great too. If you race 70 - 130 mph, a 3.42 gear is great as 130 tops out 3rd gear.

4.10s & DRs give you a lot of flexibility below about 110 mph, it's just you have to live with the high rpms when cruising. Driving at 75mph with 4.10s would grow tiring for me if I did it daily.

3.42s is a factory gear and you can pick them up used, cheap.
The OEM gears are going to have good life. Some "race" gears
are too soft (meant to bend and not break, if you have that
much shock-load) but this makes them wear in and loosen up
quicker too). Gears get weaker as you go up in ratio. All things
to consider. On street tires you will not hook up 3.23s in first
if you have any kind of decent converter, let alone anything
higher. That is, you would have to actually control wheelspin
with the throttle. Which is not so terrible, but then you need
to have decent part throttle shift programming if you're an
A4 or you'll get short-shifted and it will suck.

I test-drove a Z28 with (apparently) 2.73s and was surprised
(disappointed) with its apparent lack of guts. But my 3.23 car
I bought was much better, and 3.42s have added a tiny bit (I
did this after going up a step in tire size so it all kind of
evened out).

I think 3.73s would have been annoying on the open road.
Not to mention, I never would have found a low-miles,
OEM-durable used set for $40....

I'm just trying to decide what gears to get with the new 9inch. I think 3.73's would give me a good quarter mile while not cutting me too short on topend. 4.10's seem kinda steep, but I'm still not sure on the 3.42's. I run F1 GSD3's on all 4's but will be putting Nitto's on the rears this summer.

If you are staying on nittos for the track, 3.73 is the max gear. Once you start modding the car a lot, nittos won't hold 3.73s

On a side note, Personally, I wouldn't buy used gears for a 10 bolt because they are more prone to whine; I'd buy a whole rear if it were in good shape. Otherwise I'd get new gears.

im guessing his car wont turn more than 6k RPM's. to make the lower gears(higher numerically) work with the juice you have to turn more.
